1372659 2014-04-14 05:52:00 I call BS. Even the cheap as $200 Android phones are being sold with NFC.

No, the only phones without it ATM are iPhones, and they make up roughly 20% of the NZ market last I heard. Making something to cater to them, along with other high-end phones with Bluetooth 4.0, seems ridiculous. Then, add in the fact that a large number of EFTPOS terminals already have NFC support, and it's really an absolute no-brainer.

NFC has been enabled an functional since Android-2.3 Gingerbread, phones that run 2.2 or prior currently make up just over 1%:

Of the 1.5 billion Android devices globally, that's a large number, but still a very small percent, and it's significantly less than the amount of devices that _wouldn't_ support Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) which has really only become popular in the last 18-months. The first device to implement the 4.0 specification was the iPhone 4S, released in October 2011, but many other manufacturers didn't include it until the end of the following year, and even then only in the mid-high range phones.

So no, banks won't target iBeacon, that's just silly. The existing credit cards already use NFC, the stickers use NFC, the payment terminals use NFC, so it's basically just the ~20% iPhone users who are being left out. It makes more sense for them to use this "sticker" and all other phones to have it on their phone, than to target those iDevice users and simply leave out the other 80% of the market.

EDIT: I stand corrected, this is now back up to $250: store.telecom.co.nz
Most of the <$200 phones don't have NFC support.

1372660 2014-04-14 06:06:00 Hey chill. Regarding the snapper thread. It would seem you also need a snapper sim card as well. Without it all you can do with nfc is read tge balance iff a snapper card. It seems a big fail on snappers part. So something that should only require nfc wlso requires a special sim plod (107)
1372661 2014-04-14 07:27:00 Can't say I've used one myself. All I remember was briefly looking into it, being disappointed, then moving on... :p Chilling_Silence (9)

Really? Because Microsoft took the other path to Apple and implemented NFC ;)

1372664 2014-04-14 08:55:00 Who cares, win phones are so far from being real phones that if all the users got together, they could go into a phone booth together and make their call. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1372665 2014-04-14 09:58:00 Wonder if ASB itself knows what it's up to?

My ASB Visa Debit Card payWave works great. However, my ASB Visa Credit Card doesn't have that (Pay Wave) facility and ASB claim I need to upgrade to a Platinum Visa before I can have PayWave ...

So most of the time I use my Onecard with Visa payWave, or Mastercard with paypass ...

Signed

:illogical
My ASB visa has the pay wave logo on it.

1372666 2014-04-14 10:08:00 The thing to remember is that iBeacon is not "just" for banks, it is for retailers in general. It's just that the banks are taking the lead with NFC technology at this stage.
IBeacon seems to be pretty much non existent in NZ (pop 4.3 million) but it's getting uptake in the US (pop 350 million). I'm not sure how developers can customise NFC to work with Android phones for retailers.. I'm guessing they can somehow?

I know they can with iBeacon.

Simple, load your credit card details into it and it acts as a payWave card. ;)

Not what I was referring to. Ibeacon uses gps to guide the customer towards instore specials or what ever else a marketing dept can come up with. Payments are then made via your iTunes account without the need to wave your phone over anything. I'm not sure of the specifics but that's the overall theory.
