If you're looking into mining bitcoin you need to be looking at dedicated bitcoin mining hardware, it hasn't been profitable to mine using GPUs for a while now (as far as I know).

People run dedicated cards and boxes now, ie:

products.butterflylabs.com

products.butterflylabs.com

If you're buying the cards and intending on running them over pci-e 1x then you need a motherboard to support that: www.asrock.com or you can just run them via usb hubs I believe.

Mainly just curious after reading an article in the news about the large power bill you get from the intensive computer usage from all the mining .

1372764 2014-04-15 00:25:00 Yeah bitcoin you can't do with a PC.. Or at least you can but an ASIC miner is literally going to be ~2,000x more powerful, so it's 100% pointless.

Litecoin and other scrypt-based cryptocurrencies you can still do on your GPU semi-profitably.
I know a few others have just recently turned off their rigs, even mining Litecoin right now isn't profitable. My rigs been going for ~2 1/2 months (With a lot of teething issues) and it's so far earned me 33 LTC. Price currently ~USD$10.75 per LTC :(
It was up around 18-20 when I started but it tanked after Mt.Gox screwed over BTC price.

1372765 2014-04-15 01:35:00 Yep don't do it.
Dedicated ASIC mining hardware is the only thing worth getting into right now and with the prices in the thousands and delivery times taking months I don't think even that is worthwhile.
Many of these stories are written about mining with graphics cards like Chill is doing and ignore the fact that nobody does Bitcoin that way any more.

My 2 rigs were running 2 x graphics cards each and used around 1300W costing something like $60-70 a week in power.

On that note anyone want to buy a graphics card :)

1372766 2014-04-15 02:54:00 Yeah if you look at current pricing of LTC vs power, I'm probably only just breaking even.

It's also worth noting that I came home last night and my computer room was 27 degrees, while the other end of the house was 18 (We'd switched Aircon off)... so yeah :D

1372767 2014-04-15 04:20:00 After looking at whiteice.co.nz - which I found from Chill's sig - I notice they accept bitcoin as payment.

On a side note, I reckon White Ice are a bit of a rip - their prices and "plans" seem seriously uncompetitive, and given their obscurity, gotta wonder if it's a risk paying their installation cost.

1372768 2014-04-15 06:46:00 $99 for ADSL with Orcon, flat-rate
$99 for VDSL2 with White Ice, flat-rate

Doesn't sound too bad to me ;)
