362049 2005-06-08 03:41:00 I got a call from a mate who is playing around with Linux.

The reason for the call was he wanted to know if I had a spare modem that would work with Linux.

Now, I would be the wrong person to ask, as I’ve never even turned on a Linux machine.

So, question 1 is, what sort of Modem do you need to work with Linux?

His current modem is a VPI56SPA (TelePermit 211/01/140)

Question 2 is, do we need a new Modem or just a suitable Driver??

Any help would be appreciated.

362050 2005-06-08 04:02:00 Best modems are the HARDWARE Modems which will work with Pre-PentiumPRO CPU's

Basically if the PCI Modem says it'll work with a 60Mhz Pentium, you should be sweet :)

Chill.

362051 2005-06-08 04:17:00 Can you confirm that is 60mhz Chill?

I think his CPU is a 1.? Gig AMD.?

The Modem works fine with Windows.

Not sure if the Modem is a Win or not.

I Got heaps of hits on Google but none that I checked told me just what it was.

362052 2005-06-08 04:30:00 Yes, basically there were no Pre 100 (or maybe even pre-133 Mhz) Pentium-PRO CPU's released, so yeah.....

I get the feeling that Modem is a WinModem. Boot linux and download ScanModem frankandjacq.com

362054 2005-06-08 05:09:00 The simplest way to discover whether a modem works with Linux is to boot Linux. A Knoppix "live CD" is good for this. It will tell you if it finds a modem. I suspect that your friend has done this and it doesn't. ;) The command dmseg | less will show what hardware has been detected.

There are lists of known to work, and known not to work modems. The linmodems site (I think, www.linmodems.org) is the first and best place to look. There are very good HOWTOs about all sorts of things, includuing modems. The Linux Documentation Project site (again, I think, www.ldp.org) has the latest versions.
