361869 2005-06-07 20:28:00 I have a HP Pavilion 6327 running 98se.Grand daughter crashed it.On rebooting it goes to blue screen, runs scandisk then goes into thorough scandisk where it gets about a third through and says there was an error running scandisk exe and stops, then tries to go through it all again.I ran a utility that says I have an error in my mbr so went to dos, tried scandisk/mbr but no change. Any thoughts,Max. Max (8180)
361870 2005-06-07 20:39:00 The command to re-write the mbr from dos is fdisk /mbr
You need to do this from a win98 boot disk that has the fdisk program on it .

361872 2005-06-08 07:42:00 Well, guess whats next. A reinstall. Although the drive itself could have a problem... pctek (84)
361873 2005-06-08 07:51:00 It could in fact be a corrupt fat boot sector which is different to the mbr. The good news is that the fat(32) filesystem creates a backup of the boot sector. The bad news is that it is not easy to repair, and there are not many programs out there that can.

Testdisk is one that I can recommend though, it is very good and it is free.

You can find it here (www.cgsecurity.org)

Before you use it, make sure to read the documentation (www.cgsecurity.org) thoroughly
