361938 2005-06-08 02:33:00 just found a switch on the back of the case with 240v written on it, gonna change that one and see what happens.

No! Don't do that!
That's the secret switch that MS don't want you to know about. It prevents BSOD problems.

Just repeatedly mash the Any key.

361939 2005-06-08 04:57:00 System restore is a pile of junk, It manages to cache all virus and other infected crap on ya computer , Fails everytime if there is anything actually wrong with the comp, can't be run from outside of the windows GUI and it takes up huge amount of HD space.

Not entirely. It does work for minor issues. How much space it takes up depends on whether you leave it at its default settings or not.
And stuff all can be run from outside the GUI...........see, we should all go back to DOS :p

361941 2005-06-08 10:06:00 There are a number of freebie restore programs, and also the $$ programs.
Can anyone recommend a good one?

So that's how you "fix" a computer? Just click your heels & say "there's no place like home"? You completely rely on system restore?
If system restore just removes registry changes etc, are the Program Files/Dodgy Crap folders still there, along with dodgy_crap.exe files?

Now I'm confused. How exactly are we supposed to use it?
Here's what I do:
Disable system restore, which deletes all restore points (I think), manually remove all the nasties & when I have a happy & clean machine, create a new restore point.

Isn't that a better way?
I dunno.

Help me, Bill.

361943 2005-06-08 10:48:00 There is no such thing as a hard and fast way it must be done.

Normally I would disable system restore 2 seconds after booting the comp, then spend a good half hour removing all traces temp, cache files etc from the system before starting the hunt for infected files and malicious code.

In the case of the comp I referred to in this thread....It gave warnings about a curpted user account on boot, My cunning skills of observation also picked up the fact that the account i was logging into (the only working one of three ) was not listed under user accounts at all,and that the users documents were being stored in a temp folder,And this was the main user account.

Now, The point had been stressed that the documents belonging to the main account were highly important so at this stage I done a quick clean up of the system (Removed a dozen or so viruses, couple of hundred items of spyware) and called the owner in, Hoping that they had some how taken the step of storing folders outside the My Documents folder tree (Because,as we all know a corupted user account can and does render the documents unretrivable)

Afraid not, all user files were stored under My Documents, Faced with the prospect of the files being lost due to the wonderful logic of MS I asked the client to fasten his seatbelt and hold onto his hat as I unleashed system restore (after telling him his gear was lost, system restore never works and that I was doing it as a last grasp at thin air)

Wooommmfaaa.

Rolled it back to before the user account was corrupted, logged in sweet as, All user documents resident as per normal and basking in there own glory.

At this stage I shelved the job, will finish it in the morning, seeing as it is now again infected with spyware, viruses and malicious code of all description, she will need the full system shakedown and lockup, then be set free as a tight ship....

361944 2005-06-08 10:51:00 Bugger, forgot the entire point of my post, If I had disabled system restore then all the users files would have been lost. It pays to look at the circumstances of each machine before jumping it and just charging ahead with the "better way"

This is the limitation of FAQ's and such....

I'd plug in a USB drive, retrieve their important docs then reinstall everything from scratch.
