362685 2005-06-10 09:04:00 I have had a problem for some time with websites that will not display. The message I get from Mozilla is Website.....Could not be found. Please try again. I had a different but similar message when using IE6. When using IE6 I checked all of the settings on Windows and defaulted the settings so they were the same as my wife’s computer (her computer runs Windows XP Home edition and will display the pages correctly). My computer is running XP professional. I thought changing the browser would be the cure but this did not work. I have asked numerous people to try and find a solution but none has been found. :help: Do you have any ideas? Clearview (8326)
362686 2005-06-10 09:08:00 Have you tried checking your Hosts file? It is usually found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and can be opened with Notepad. FoxyMX (5)
362687 2005-06-10 09:36:00 As all ready posted there may be an issue with a HOSTS file on your computer.

As you are using XP Pro you will need to check whether a file called HOSTS is present here: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.

If it is present, then right click on and and select open. When prompted select Notepad to open it, or if it is too large for Notepad, then use Wordpad.

Once inside take a look down the listed IP's in the second column. If a website you cannot access is listed there and next to it in the first column is the numbers 127.0.0.1 then it is being blocked and hence your problem.

The 127.0.0.1 is the location of your computer, so when the entry, for example 127.0.0.1 http://www.page.com is requested, your computer believes the location of this page is on your computer, and as it is not there at all it is ignored and does not load, and then it skips along to the next file and thus the webpage requested is blocked from loading the banner, Cookie, or some unscrupulous javascript file that has been previously blocked.

Now the question is, what blocked it? The answer to this only you can determine. For example, have you ever, or are you currently running a firewall, a pop-up blocker, an anti-virus program, or maybe something like Ad-aware, or spybot, or spyware blaster. All such programmes are capable of detecting something and deciding to write an entry into the HOSTS file to prevent the page loading in the future. This may be because you set very high protection rules in the first place, or because there is a genuine threat there that you have not noticed before on your wifes connection.

At the end of the day if there is an entry in the HOSTS file list you do not want blocked, then delete that entry and SAVE the change, then refresh the web browser.

Regards,

Timothy

Thank you for your reply I will give this a go. I have also put in a new modem hoping this was the problem.

362689 2005-06-11 03:43:00 It wasn't the modem. Believe it or not, the error messages from the Internet are usually accurate. If a page can't be found, it doesn't exist at the address the system was given. ;) Graham L (2)
