362319 2005-06-09 07:55:00 Do motherboards affect the performance of a computer with same specifications? E.g. 2 computers with same CPU, Video card, ram, psu. etc., but having 2 different motherboards - one cost < $100/- and the other costs >$300/-, will they have same of similar performance? Of course, the more expensive MB usually have more features (sound/video/LAN, etc) than its cheaper counterpart; other than those additional (optional) features, do they produce same results (performance)?

How critical does the motherboard affect the performance of a computer? Or, they don't affect the performance at all?

Cheers

362320 2005-06-09 08:00:00 From my experience, it is less the model of motherboard, and more the chipset it uses.

IE, most nforce 2 mobo's should perform relatively similar (within reason) etc

362321 2005-06-09 08:07:00 As long as the boards have the same chipset, there is not too much difference in performance between a cheap board and and expensive board.

More expensive boards may have more overclocking options and be more stable at a higher FSB (Front Side Bus). In real world terms you may only experience a 5% increase in performance with a more expensive board, but when you are seeking every little bit of extra FPS, it all counts ;)

362322 2005-06-09 08:21:00 the difference between a good stable board and a fast board is only around 1%. with poor boards it can be greater.

the single biggest thing with motheboards is how stable it is. often the fastest boards are more unstable, everything is pushed to the max.

362323 2005-06-09 08:41:00 I don't worry about motherboard performance within the same chipset myself.
Far more important to consider:

1) Warranty
2) Releases of new bios software to fix bugs, cpu support
3) Stability
4) Features
5) A quiet but good chipset cooling setup
6) Good space to install CPU heatsinks
7) Correct documentation

Any performance features from manufacturers tend to be hype.
