363403 2005-06-12 16:03:00 "Helping" a friend, we had to do a complete burn down and re-install XP-PRO. He had lost the NIC driver, and Dell had the wrong Service Number, and after a lot of research, we found the correct one, and got that driver back. The audeo card had to have a new driver too.

Anyway, all the internals are ok now, but when we go online, the browser pages have a degraded vusual effect. Originaly, the owner had used the "ACCESSIBILITY" area to change the contrast to help with his poor eyesight. That is not running now, and the only time there is a degraded visual, is when online. All the other time (using Belarc, for instance, or even internal files) everything looks fine. It's just the online visuals that are "strange" and don't look right.

I figured that the visual environment was global, and would affect all the screens. That is not the case here.

Any ideas? :nerd:

363404 2005-06-13 05:36:00 What do you mean by "degraded visual effect"?

It may help if you take a screenshot and upload it here ( . neoburn . net/imagef1/upload/" target="_blank">sal . neoburn . net) then post back here with the link

To make it kinda simple as I am not at that puter right now, the colors are all messed up online, and the backgrounds just don't look right either . I left a second puter there, another Dell, a little smaller and slower, but on the same isp and dsl, just using a router, and the difference in colors is really . . er . . . BAD! But only when online thru a browser or so . The colors of the desktop and all the windows available without online, are normal . I thoight all the color settings are supposed to be global . Can do tomorrow if you like for the screen shot .

363406 2005-06-13 06:44:00 If online, then its probably not the desktop settings, its IEs settings. Go into IE Tools, Internet Options and have a play around with the sttings there. Like Accessibilty for instance. pctek (84)
363407 2005-06-13 06:51:00 Is it possible that he uses some form of local proxy software to speed up the loading of webpages?

These are usually provided as a service by the ISP and work by compressing images to decrease their load times

363408 2005-06-13 07:13:00 If XP has just been reinstalled, did someone reinstall the videocard drivers?

Without videocard drivers, any display wont have enough colours and will look crappy.

I wondered about this too, but since there's another puter on the same isp, and thru the same dsl and router and it doesn't have the degraded colors, I can't imagine it being a proxy . . but I'll look when I get over there today .

As for this quote:

"Without videocard drivers, any display wont have enough colours and will look crappy . ",

I agree, but when we got the puter back online, there were a few updates to get including the NVIDIA update too from M$ . We got them all, but the colors are just on the browser stuff anyway, and the internal pages all display normally, including his desktop pix of "Starry Night" by Van Gough . The colors there look normal, if one thinks Van Gough had normal colors anyway! lol .

So, with two computers on the same hook-up, and the same XP-PRO, and the same hub/router, we can compare the output of both of them at the same time, but his is definately degraded while online only .
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

363410 2005-06-13 22:42:00 I would get the official drivers from the Nvidia site .

Not from the Windowsupdate site . They may make a diff .

363411 2005-06-14 00:48:00 ty . . . . never thought that way . . again I thank-you .

I will be over at his place tomorrow to see what grief I can cause again . . . .

363412 2005-06-18 05:17:00 Fixed It!!!!!!

OK, it's my fault . . . . . :D

I had installed XP-PRO with SP-2, and that's what I found out killed the video quality . . . the visuals were all messed up . . the screen was too large, and you could not get to the "ACCEPT" or "DECLINE" buttons on the bottom of the screen to reset the screen size .

Here's what I found . . . . . .

If you have the wrong vidcard driver installed . . SP-2 will make a mess outta things .

The "O" in the service tag looked like a "Q", and that's what was wrong . . . it wasn't SP-2!!!! Damn Dell and their teenie little letters in their Service Tags!!!!
