363830 2005-06-14 09:13:00 Hi people I brought a pci firewire card (DSE) and DSE firewire cable (ilink) the other day so I could could do some editing. When I connect it up to my pc it takes forever to detect when it does I try to capture the video and the pc pretty much freezes up and the only way to free it up is to turn of my camcorder. All drivers are installed. When I connect up via usb seems ok except I have no sound but thats probably a setting somewhere.

My specs are:
Amd 2400XP
1Gig Ram
120Gig HDD
XP Home SP2

I have tried several capturing programs all have the same result. Im thinking that either the cable or the card is faulty, I guess its my fault for buying a dse branded product. Any ideas folks am I right ???

363831 2005-06-14 09:24:00 Why use firewire? Is your PC only USB 1? Anyway maybe a reinstall of the firewire card and software may help. berryb (99)
363832 2005-06-14 09:33:00 Some firewire cards get screwed up with nic's .

Check the 1394 connection under my network places .

Under properties/TCP . Is it on Obtain an ip?

And are you using the power for the cam? While its connected? And how many watts, is the PSU in the case?

Firewire is faster than USB for video . Thats why he's using it .

363833 2005-06-14 09:37:00 Yep it on auto ip, PSU is 300 watt and the cam is running off its battery Overdrive_5000 (4950)
363834 2005-06-14 09:39:00 Hmm might help if u connect the cam to power .

It might make a diff Overdrive . And then connect it to the firewire port . The PSU may not be enough to deal with a cam running off a battery .

363835 2005-06-14 09:43:00 So you mean hook the cam up to its charger ? The cam is a Sony DCR-TRV285E Overdrive_5000 (4950)

because it's the best way to import video!

Shouldn't make a difference, if the battery hasn't got anoth juice camera will just turn off, in saying that i always plug camera into mains as it is a pain in camera stops during import .

If the charger is also part of the power supply yup . . . .

Some cam chargers like the one I use (panasonic dS30A) .

The battery goes on top of the power supply (it slots in), which also acts as the charger (BUT only when the battery is put on top) .

When the battery isnt on top, it also acts as the power supply .

True but depending on what else Overdrive has in the system, with a 300W, the internal devices may zap most of the power needed for things like the USB and firewire ports. ie. Thats why if USB ports dont work on a low PSU, a powered USB hub comes in handy.
