363747 2005-06-20 00:10:00 I am in a similar situation as you are in however i have 2 BELKIN bluetooth dongles and at the moment it is working perfectly fine with my dial up. So hang in there, as I am about to get an ADSL connection and use the same hardware. If it works I will let you know. A week from today is when telecom will activate my ADSL (My total expence on the 2 dongles a year ago was $170) alopes (5331)

I use a Billion wireless router, Its situated in my lounge,My laptop can pick up the signal in any room in the house at full strength, and i can walk around my (largish) yard and still get perfect reception, Moving into my shed works fine, though the signal dies in the room off the shed if the shed door is shut .

My point?

If your going from building to building you maybe better off just running a cable between the 2, I eventually just ended up running a 50m cat6 cable to the room off the shed . . . .

No idea about the Belkin, I won't comment on gear in Harvey Norman, You could perhaps ask yourself if a fridge salesman is the right guy to talk to as far as networking is concerned

363749 2005-06-20 01:15:00 We use a Linksys wireless access point ( WRT54GS ) connected to the free modem from telecom , the good thing about linksys access points is that they released the firmware for it , so you can download the mod version and then turn the transmit power right up ( in sacrifice for heat ) www.ascent.co.nz

We get good range on it but you can also buy some more powerful aerials that is much better

363750 2005-06-20 01:44:00 What about a combination wireless and wired network?

Ok, heres my situation . . .
My son has a shed he uses out the back of my house, he actually lives with his mother, but plays with computers in the sleepout . i have a truck that i hope to have fitted out as a second home ASAP, which will mean i will no longer have to sleep in my office . Now the house has a cable modem, and shortly after i get a fileserver and gateway machine together, i hope to wire in a machine in the lounge room for music and guest use, plus run something to the sleepout, wired or cable i am not sure, and then of course i'll need something for my laptop in the truck . My current laptop does not have the facilitys for wireless built in, and the sleepout is about 30-40 metres from where i would have expected to distribute a wired network from . The truck is of course is a metal bodied box, and is 10-20 metres away from the office . The house is a radio unfreindly concrete box, but i could easely mount something on the roof if need be .

What might be a good device that will allow me to give cat6 connections to the wired machines, and wireless to laptops? i was hoping to simply go
cable-modem --> office_server --> new_device --> all machines .

What security measures (if any) exist to stop anyone from walking down the street and using my network by simply sitting down with a laptop outside my house?

Forgive me, for i know stuff all about radio networking!

363751 2005-06-20 02:26:00 I would get a cheap Genius switch and a Linksys Access point, Linksys are great get either the one mentioned above or a WAP54g, you can get modded firmware for both to really boost the performance.

If you find you need an areial for the bus, you can make a cantenna for about $10 - $20.

Security, just enable WEP, if you like you can even filter MAC addresses. You should be pretty safe.

So i am planning to discontinue using the BELKIN Dongles. If you wish to buy them off me i can sell both off them to you for $120. They are 5 4 months old and are the 100mtr range ones.

I have a belkin router (and it wasn't bought from Harvey Norman, Metla you want to get out of Wangavegas from time to time) It works throughout our 3 bedoom 1,1/2 story house and the yard. They are also considered by lots of computer techs as being among the most reliable products and also come with a lifetime warantee. But that might not be good enough for some people.
Metla usually gives good advice, but he is inclined to be sarcastic at times and isn't always correct.
Check out belkins website at www.belkin.com

Have the rules changed? is this OK. I thought we weren't allowed to use this site to sell stuff.
