| 363963 | 2005-06-14 17:27:00 | Hi all, I just installed windows xp Professional. (I was using 98SE) A friend suggested that i install XP seperatly & duel run them, so i managed to do that in my partioned drive (1 on each partion). Also got my new wireless & Optical Keyboard & Mouse which needs XP to run, which now runs on 98SE :@@: :D Anyway my internal modem is in Com 3, however XP doesn't see com 3 & 4. Though I'm getting xtra broadband delivered on thursday :D:D:D So should i do nothing til the broadband modem arrives arrives & use the one that comes with the pack? (Now sure how it goes in, but its ment to be easy) or will i have to use my internal modem to hook the broadband modem up? |

I thought broadband modem can only be connected to the computer through ports like RJ-45, Parallel port etc.? Good luck, anyway  Cheers :) |

| 363965 | 2005-06-14 18:32:00 | nah.........hook the broadband modem up to the network port on your puter or the usb port........it's very odd that the xp wont 'see' the existing modem .....xp is usually pretty good about that sort of stuff. | drcspy (146) | ||
| 363966 | 2005-06-14 19:06:00 | I have had no clue how a broadband modem would hook up  It's kinda an old modem (New when i brought the computer a few years ago) & wi help said older ones won't work, just didnt think it could be that old . Thanks for the help jameskan & drcspy . A new query, alot of programs that I've installed through Win 98 are giving me can not find a file etc but working fine when i open them in XP . Is it a problem/should I install everything though XP to have 1 copy of each program under each windows? or is it fine? |

Is it a problem/should I install everything though XP to have 1 copy of each program under each windows? or is it fine? Anyway my internal modem is in Com 3, however XP doesn't see com 3 & 4. The com ports don't matter. There is no com 3 and 4 anyway, not physically, its the way Windows sets it up. Get XP to detect the modem (it probably already did) and just install an XP driver for it. Check in Device Manager, you'll probably see a yellow exclamation mark next to Coomunicatiosn device or something if it found it but doesn't know what driver to use. XP will assign it to whatever com port (virtual) it likes. With the software, did you format the XP partitionas NTFS? If so, anything installed onto it won't be readable by 98. 98 can only see Fat32 stuff. If both partitions are Fat32 it shouldn't be a problem, if the software requires registry entries or puts stuff in the system folders (most MS programmes like Office) then you will have to install it for both. Why bother though? I presume you kept 98 for running non-XP comaptible stuff? So just boot to 98 when you need to run those and the rest of the time boot to XP. Don't really need to duplicate everything. |

| 363968 | 2005-06-14 21:59:00 | I presume you kept 98 for running non-XP comaptible stuff? Win Xp has a tool called Compatibility Wizard that enables most programmes from previous Windows O/Ss to run. I know for a fact it will even run a Win 95 game on XP (was Red Alert: Command and Conquer) |

Also Jewels of the Oracle which required Program Manager to install. It hung when it wanted it but I just end tasked and continued and voila, it works fine. |
