364608 2005-06-17 09:28:00 AVG's servers may be busy. Go here (www.majorgeeks.com) to manually download the latest definitions. Save the file somewhere like My Documents or your Desktop, right-click on AVG's tasktray icon, choose Update and put a tick in the Update from Folder (or whatever it is) and point AVG to the downloaded file.

The tasktray icon is black and grey because it has not been updated. It sometimes requires a reboot to update itself properly

Regarding your virus, was it AVG that alerted you to it and picked it up? What was the virus?

364609 2005-06-17 09:29:00 Its black and grey because it knows it is out of date.

Sorry I should have said I have tried their web site and tried to download, but won't happen.
Yes it was AVG that spotted the virus,it was Java byte virus. It said it couldn't fix,as did pccillin, but it seems to have gone.
Will have a go via major geeks.

364611 2005-06-17 09:46:00 The AVG servers have been closed most of the day from here, but were back up late this afternoon. godfather (25)
364612 2005-06-17 09:48:00 For the Java Byte virus go to Control Panel > Java-plugin > cache tab and click on the Clear button. That will remove it.

While you are in there find the option to update Java so that you have the latest version installed.

364613 2005-06-17 09:58:00 Was it JavaByteVerify? In which case not a real big deal, more something to do with MS and Avg conflicting and easily removed as above. When you see that little coffee cup with a bit of steam coming off it in your systray it means you've caught it but as I said no big deal.

As for AVG, I have experienced a lot of 'eccentricities' and that's also not a problem. What you get with freebies. Overloaded servers. Apart from that (if you can cope without the helpdesk) they are excellent..............m

P.S. JavaByteVerify, "AFAIK", is contracted by attending ahem sites and problems like this can be reduced by using an alternative browser.......m

364614 2005-06-17 10:11:00 Great stuff chaps.
I went to m.geeks, from there I downloaded and got AVG to take up 5meg,this didnt seem to be the priority update they tell to get on with.
Re. Java,if I go to control panel al I can see is Java and the icon,no mention of plug ins that I can see.
The virus was just java bytes, you would never se me at theose ahem sites :o

364615 2005-06-17 10:19:00 When you see that little coffee cup with a bit of steam coming off it in your systray it means you've caught it but as I said no big deal . What?? When the coffee cup is in the Task Tray it doesn't mean you have caught the JavaByteVerify virus . Where did you get that information? It just means that Java is installed and running and the icon can be disabled from view in the options if desired .

P . S . JavaByteVerify, "AFAIK", is contracted by attending ahem sites and problems like this can be reduced by using an alternative browser . . . . . . . mThat is not true either . You don't have to go to "ahem sites" to get that virus . I have found it on computers that have not been anywhere near any "ahem sites" .

I have also found it on computers where Firefox was the only browser being used .

364616 2005-06-17 10:22:00 I went to m . geeks, from there I downloaded and got AVG to take up 5meg,this didnt seem to be the priority update they tell to get on with . That is because it contains all the updates since the last program update .

Re . Java,if I go to control panel al I can see is Java and the icon,no mention of plug ins that I can see . Can you not double click the Java icon and open its control panel?
