364458 2005-06-18 13:33:00 All CDs have a significant error rate compared to a hard drive Not saying you are wrong, but personally I would trust the CD far more than any harddrive.
Maybe I have yet to experience the downside of CDs

Maybe I have yet to experience the downside of CDsA scratch on a CD would soon render a good deal of its contents unavailable and all of the contents if the CD is trodden on and broken. :p

364460 2005-06-19 00:12:00 Sunlight has also been known to cause failure on a CD-R as well.

But you are right not to trust HDD long term as well.

The raw data error rate on a CD-R is about between 1 bit it 100,000 to 1 bit in 1,000,000. But its the errors due to physical factors after that which cause the issues.

364461 2005-06-19 10:23:00 Thanks for the link Paradox, but 11 mgbs will take forever on my dial up, in a rural area, but I have bookmarked it, until I can get someone with cable/jetstream to download it for me. supergran (108)
364462 2005-06-19 12:09:00 Oh the joys of data verification.

But I agree, CD's arent perfect. Ive only had 100% perfection with the Kodak Gold + Silver Ultima 74min (650MB) CD-Rs. Those things rocked!

The TOC isnt actually deleted on the CD too, rather just replaced with a new/updated one. All the old data is still on the CD. Once written, its there, unless its a -RW.

Chill.

364463 2005-06-20 02:27:00 Nothing is 100% perfection, fail safe, foolproof, etc. But I would rather have a few cd backups as well as other ways of trying to save things, rather than have my h/d crash, which my old puter did with no warning, and loose everything. At least on cds I have a fair show of saving something, as I don't just put them all on one cd, but thanks for all the info guys and gals, it is sinking in. LOL :) supergran (108)
