365264 2005-06-19 09:58:00 Is Open Office any good? I have been using the old 602 text office suite how does to rate against that?

And What about The Gimp, Whats That Like ?

365265 2005-06-19 10:02:00 Open Office and Gimp are both good. I take it you are using Windows? The best way to judge them is to download them both and see if they perform the tasks you require. I use them both at home and don't have any problems with them. :) Jen (38)
365266 2005-06-19 10:08:00 Open Office is great - I use it at work running on XP and at home running on Linux. I write all my course material on OO. It has great compatibility with MS Office if you need it.

I am not quite so familar with the GIMP - but use it for some web graphics and basic photo editing. If you know Photoshop you will have lots of skills you can transpose to the GIMP with a little fiddling.

365267 2005-06-19 12:10:00 I can only speak for OO and the part I like most is the fully integrated pdf writer - it is treated like an export / save as function rather than a print driver (as does Adobe). The other beauty is full compatibility with various MS versions of Word / Excel.
Just my opinion, Andrew

365268 2005-06-19 18:42:00 I like OO as M$ WORD has a problem now from the latest patches from M$. :badpc: I find a lot of people have had some problems with WORD for a few weeks now, but it hasn't caused OO any grief at all.

Just assign it all the duties for which you would normally use WORD.

OO looks pretty bullet-proof so far.

365269 2005-06-20 00:16:00 I think OO is great on either Linux or Doze .

In fact I thought it was so great that I installed it on a computer I made up for my son and daughter in law . Unfortunately, as he works with Word all day at work, he found it a pain learning a new programme and wanted to go back to Word so he wasn't swapping from one to the other each day . Apart from a situation like that, OO works well .

Just a bit difficult working out how to save your Normal template!

365270 2005-06-20 01:01:00 OpenOffice. The next best thing to sliced bread :)
I'm currently using the Version 2 Beta and it works like a charm.
The only problem I have with OO is with the bleeding spell checker not quite working correctly at times when you compare it with M$ Office.
Load times are still a little long but improved over the old version.
Apart from that only a few minor visual bugs I dont like.

Overall a great free alternative :2cents:
