| 365168 | 2005-06-19 11:01:00 | The default folder that appears is handled by the application your using. So are you talking about just downloads, and if so what application are you using? (eg Firefox, IE, Opera...) | Parry (5696) | ||

In FireFox by Mozilla ( . mozilla . org/products/firefox/" target="_blank">www . mozilla . org) , they are originally defaulted to Desktop . I don't use Opera, so don't know where they go . I set up a harddrive to be the area where downloaded files go . I call the ones for FireFox "FF Dnlds Here" . In the TOOLS on FireFox, goto: Options>>Downloads and click on the "Save all files to this folder", click the drop down arrow and click on "Other" then goto the drive and generate a folder with the name of your choice . Save it and you're done . I should say that I try to never get any downloads through Internet Explorer at all . I just make believe that all files and downloads are infected on that source, and I usually send the files/folders I have to get from there to my Desktop and right click them and scan for viruses there . If I find something I gotta have, I copy/paste the url from IE, and put it in FF's browser and the just hit my enter key . That keeps you off IE . It is not uncommon to find a virus coat-tailing in on a download you want to get . I also like to use SpoofStick ( . corestreet . com/spoofstick/" target="_blank">www . corestreet . com) too to make sure I am on the site on which I want to be . BTW: if you have some files that you just cannot find, but you have some idea of the date or a word or some included item in the file, you can use the Search utility to find it by setting the search parameters to look for that info . I use Google Desktop Search (http://desktop . google . com/) , and it will find things very quickly . Both utilities can search for . jpg, . wmp, . doc, etc, as well as date, size and words that occur to you that might be in the file . Hope this works for you . . . . |

For Firefox you can set it to download everything to the one location. Make a folder called "Internet Downloads" and stick it somewhere logical to you eg Desktop or under My Documents. Open up Firefox and go to Preferences > Downloads. Select "Save all Files to this folder" and point it at your new folder. That way you can download and just retrieve anything you need out of the one folder. For MS Office programs, you can set it to save in the one default location unless otherwise specified. That way you don't have to worry about it saving in the last used location which may not be where you normally save your work. To change the location for Word, just follow the instructions here (wordprocessing.about.com). You can do the same for Excel etc. |
