| 365001 | 2005-06-18 11:43:00 | Recently I have found that when using IE to browse, the taskbar will 'freeze' and I cannot click anything on it. the windows key does not work either in this state. To fix it I have to quit IE. Upon loading it up again and going to a site (any will do), IE will then usually crash with this error: Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. blah blah.. If I click for more information it tells me this: AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mshtml.dll ModVer: 6.0.2900.2627 Offset: 0013b6bd Microsoft say that this is caused by "Smart Tags Support for Internet Explorer", and they say I should disable or uninstall this. The only problem there is I do not have "Smart Tags Support for Internet Explorer". :angry |

Where you doing any particular task in IE when the taskbar (and I presume Windows Explorer) locks up? You can also find a list of MSHTML.DLL errors here (www.generation.net) which may be helpful. |

| 365003 | 2005-06-18 22:15:00 | I've scanned with Spybot and Ad-aware on latest definitions, found nothing of any importance except where ad-aware thought that me adding the DNS servers for my DSL on a new NIC was a browser hijack attempt.... although if there's any other scanning program you could reccommend.... I scanned for viruses with trend micros's housecall - it detected 2: 1) something that was residing in a temporary java file, and 2) something that it called TROJ_SERVU.I, apparently resident in Serv-uDaemon.exe.bak (part of a backup of my Serv-U FTP server program) I checked trend micro's website for information about TROJ_SERVU but I could only find A, B, C, and D. variants. I then manually downloaded the latest virus definitions for norton (as liveupdate aint working, ref. here (forums.pcworld.co.nz). I then quarantined the files housecall said were infected and of course norton said they were clean. Forgot to add: the IE/taskbar thing seems to happen randomly, not straight after browsing to a new website or anything like that. No, I can still use windows explorer to view everything on my harddrive and such, though I usually do need to restart to get the taskbar working properly again, for if after it 'fixes itself', I then log off and back on the taskbar will be frozen again and I will have to restart to fix it, at which point windows will say "Ending non-responsive program: explorer.exe" with the 'end now' button that you might as well just press anyway. |

| 365004 | 2005-06-18 22:31:00 | I do not mean to impose on your software choices but have you tried Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) I use IE for 3 things at the most: 1) Windows Update... and that's if I really have to 2) MS Office Update... and that's if I really have to 3) Updating my SB Audigy drivers and software online (haven't found an alternative to this one yet. But as stated before check your PC for Adware nasties and spyware. cheers chiefnz |

| 365005 | 2005-06-18 22:36:00 | 3) Updating my SB Audigy drivers and software online (haven't found an alternative to this one yet. Why for SB drivers? I use Mozilla for everything, ASUS website the other day insisted on IE for a search of the faqs (and I deleted it) so I just went round a different method of getting to the same page and no probs. Never had anything not work totally yet. |

| 365006 | 2005-06-18 22:44:00 | I might use firefox were it not that I have become quite used to IE and how to use it and change settings, and also that all the extra (and useful) toolbars I have do not seem to support it. | Agent_24 (57) | ||
| 365007 | 2005-06-18 23:15:00 | ... and also that all the extra (and useful) toolbars I have do not seem to support it.Ah, so you have installed toolbars for IE? Which ones? You might want to uninstall them and see if your problem persists. | Jen (38) | ||
| 365008 | 2005-06-19 00:13:00 | I do not believe that they are they are the cause of the problem. They are 1) Canon Easy Web-Print toolbar, 2) the Norton Anti-Virus and Firewall settings/scan toolbar. I suppose "all the toolbars" isn't exactly right since there's only two of them. |

I use Mozilla for everything, ASUS website the other day insisted on IE for a search of the faqs (and I deleted it) so I just went round a different method of getting to the same page and no probs. Never had anything not work totally yet. The Auto Update feature of the Creative web site does not yet support any other browsers apart from IE. The web site states that support for the other browsers will be available soon... of course they said this 6 months ago...we're still waiting... maybe MS has its finger in the Creative Labs distribution pie. I prefer to use the Auto Update feature as it tells me exactly what I need to download.. I manually installed new updates once and lost my sound for about 3 days... being an audiophile this was not the best of times for me :( so now I let the Auto Update function do everything for me. cheers chiefnz |

Sad fact of life that just discounting things based on your belief (what are you basing your belief on?, pure optimisim?) won't help get your browser fixed. It is highly likely to be one of the browser add-ons. Delete all activex controls and all browser helper objects, run crapcleaner. Hit the old cow with a reg scanner. Look through ya hijackthis for any nasties. Reboot the sucker. Chances are problem will be solved. |
