364935 2005-06-18 04:41:00 I was happily having lunch and listening to music on my comp. when suddenly the music stopped playing and the screen went black. There is power getting to the comp. and I checked that all the cables inside the comp. were tightly pressed in. It sounds like nothing is happening inside the comp. only the fan is running. No burping of the hard drive. Comp. green light is on.
Win98se. Any help would be much appreciated.

364936 2005-06-18 05:29:00 Could be that the PSU has died, try ejecting the CD drive to see if it has power, if it won't work then the PSU is probably dead.

If it does eject then your motherboard or something else may have failed...

How about beeps, are there any of those?

364937 2005-06-18 06:12:00 CD Drive works normally. No beeps are heard.
I am thinking of a component failure. Might have to take it to a comp. shop.
The cpu. motherboard and graphics were upgraded 3 1/2 yrs ago and the HDD 5 yrs ago. How time flies.

Pull the plug on it wait 20 mins and try again. See what happens. That's not an ancient computer but also depends how much it has been used..........m

364939 2005-06-18 06:57:00 It used to beep, not much. I have switched it off and on about 8 times at 1 min to 2hr intervals. No change. It is only used as a home computer. Do banking, play music, check emails, bit of surfing. gradebdan (2186)
364940 2005-06-18 07:01:00 A normal healthy computer will make one beep, obviously, although some compaq's will make two. Agent_24 (57)
364941 2005-06-23 10:15:00 Hi all
Just to finish this thread. The comp. shop diagnosed a faulty motherboard. At the same time I was offered a surplus comp. from a friend for $100. CPU 2 gig, 40 gig hdd, 256 ddram win XP. So all happy now. Just have to find my way around XP after win 98.

364942 2005-06-23 10:37:00 Why not wipe (or ghost the drive) and install Win 98 :)
If you do this, back up any files you need (like emails, bookmarks etc)
