364923 2005-06-18 02:12:00 I have recently moved and want to set up my network again by putting cabling down the walls between two separate floors. Anyone know how to do this? Verner (8374)
364924 2005-06-18 02:21:00 depends on what the walls and floor/ceiling are made of. basicly rip it open, lay cables remake floor/wall etc. tweak'e (69)
364925 2005-06-18 02:37:00 It might be easier and less destructive to go wireless plod (107)
364926 2005-06-18 03:22:00 Unless it's in a commercial building with provision for service ducting, the only answer has to be "with some difficulty". :( Even then there's firestop precautions between floors --- which are almost certainly subject to lots of new regulations and paperpwork).

I would be inclined (if it's a wooden floor) to use a "long series" drill and drill though the floor and ceiling close to the wall. ;)

364927 2005-06-18 06:34:00 Be extremely careful if using long drills - I have heard horror stories of the drill bit going astray and drilling through electrical cable, and coming out the side of the wall when it shouldn't. somebody (208)

Not to mention water / sewage pipes....

You could use the underestimated 'drill and hope' method. That is, just drill and deal with the aftermath if and when it occurs. I'd personally not reccomend this, but hey if your a lucky person...

364929 2005-06-18 10:38:00 Is running the cable externally an option? eg in the corners of the room using trunking, or even outside the building using conduit (don't know if this is legal though)? somebody (208)
364930 2005-06-18 10:55:00 AFAIK yes external conduit is an option.........m (Just seen it done) mark c (247)

The TV guy has put an aerial connection betwen floors. Siurely it cannot be more challenging than that.

364932 2005-06-19 02:05:00 Outside would be fine ... but it's fairly obvious where underfloor/above ceiling wires are likely to be. Sewer (!) and water pipes, likewise. Note that I was suggesting drilling just outside the wall. Wires and pipes inside walls can be a problem: I have seen someone drill into a compressed air line (we thought it was a water line at first, but it was just the condensation in the pipe ;). But most fixed wiring and pipes go inside the wall, because that's both easy to do and the "right" way when the framing is bare. Graham L (2)
