364812 2005-06-18 01:49:00 A friend has mistakenly overwritten an important doc, and no backups.
Is there any good, preferably free, software or method of recovering a lot of the previous version.
Cheers

364815 2005-06-18 03:37:00 First, make sure they stop using the computer. ;)

It's quite likely that the file, or an earlier version of it is still intact. But as long as it's "non-existant" to Windows, it could be overewritten.

There are a number of "undelete" programmes around. Use the Search button on this site and enter "pcinspector". That will find threads containing links to thiat programme. Another I've seen recommended is "Getdataback".

364816 2005-06-18 03:49:00 It may not be as simple as recovering a deleted file, which the above utilities that Graham L suggests can be used for.

In this case the file contents have changed and been replaced, the file has not been deleted.

The common remedy in this case seems to point to this utility
http://www.doc-regenerator.com-http.com/

But it's neither free or cheap (US$50). Nor is anything guaranteed.

364817 2005-06-18 03:53:00 But we don't get "physical" overwriting these days. A new file is written, then it is given the same name as the previous version. The file of the previous version still exists on the disk. It has been deleted. So an undelete utility should get it. Graham L (2)
364818 2005-06-18 05:13:00 Try these; not free but probably got trial versions:
EasyRecovery DataRecovery - www.ontrack.com
O&O UnErase - www.oo-software.com
Search and Recover - www.iolo.com
Undelete 5 - www.executive.com
