2005-06-21 09:38:00 | Hello All :) This question is related to one I posted last year ( Click here ( & highlight=Internet+gateway" target="_blank">pressf1.co.nz) to see the thread) now every since I have had a computer & that we starred to shear the internet our network was set-up like this: Dads computer (with the internal ADSL Modem in it) | Network Hub | Stus computer----|----- optimax03/ Media Player | Any other computers we have Then a few weeks back dad swapped the internal ADSL Modem out of his (as he ( & all of us) has been having issues with his for a few months to a year or more) (I am unsure what the problem he was having, but I think it was a speed issue any how his computer is 5 10 years old at lest maybe even older then that.) & swapped the internal ADSL Modem it to our 2nd computer (optimax03 you may remember I use to call it our Spare/web dev testing/Server/mum's or Media Player) & now out network looks like this: Optimax03/Media Player computer (with the internal ADSL Modem in it) | Network Hub | Stus computer----|----- Dads computer | Any other computers we have Now since dad swap the internal ADSL Modem I have not been able to get a thing called Internet Gateway to work Here are a screen shot of it: lvcac.orcon.net.nz lvcac.orcon.net.nz As I was looking for my old thread I found another thread which had a link to this: www.practicallynetworked.com But it does not say how to turn this very useful feature Any ideas? Thanks :) & sorry about the long post

2005-06-21 09:49:00 | I hate these sort of arrangements for PCs sharing internet. I would go buy a 4 port ADSL modem, put a network card in each PC if they haven't all already got one, then plug each PC into the modem. Nice and easy and no-one has to worry about other PCs being on or not.

Also make sure the computer with the modem in it is running XP & has internet conection sharing enabled. If you can afford about $100, go down to Dick Smith & buy an ADSL router with an inbuilt 4 port switch - that would be a much more reliable fix, and you will probably find that the internet is faster going through a propper router than using ICS. |

2005-06-21 22:17:00 | you need to find the ip address of the computer with the ADSL modem, Go to start>Run and type in command. On the 'DOS' screen that opens, type ipconfig (if using Windows NT,200,XP) or winipcfg (if using Win 95,98,ME). Hit Enter, and that will tell you the IP. To get out of this screen type Exit. As mentioned, the better fix would be the 4 port switch with built-in modem

2005-06-28 04:43:00 | I hate these sort of arrangements for PCs sharing internet. You might hate it, but it works well for us :) I would go buy a 4 port ADSL modem Those things cost money! :p & They are not cheep either! & my dad wont what to get one any one when we all ready have a internal modem, any way That would not solve the issue of not been able to see how much bandwidth we use, which the internet gateway did. put a network card in each PC if they haven't all already got one. Yes, they all ready have a network card in them. it sounds like DHCP isn't working properly. you need to find the ip address of the computer with the ADSL modem, and manually enter that as your gateway (control panel -> network connections - double click on your network connection, then click properties, then select internet protocol & click properties. you can manually enter all your network info here). Also make sure the computer with the modem in it is running XP & has internet conection sharing enabled. Its Not DHCP or I would be posting here about not been able to access the internet or any of the other computers If internet connection sharing was not working correctly would that cause this type of issue? If you can afford about $100, go down to Dick Smith & buy an ADSL router with an inbuilt 4 port switch - that would be a much more reliable fix, and you will probably find that the internet is faster going through a propper router than using ICS. Yeath, that could be a good fix but 2 issues: 1. Dad wont what to get one, any how when, we all ready have a internal modem 2. That would not solve the issue of not been able to see how much bandwidth we use, which the internet gateway did. Any other ideas?
