365573 2005-06-20 21:16:00 Heres my problem story:
I was running Windows XP Pro and i got some terrible adware, spyware, and trojans. I managed to delete them but i decided to do a clean install of Pro when i noticed I didnt have the disc so i used XP Home Edition instead and did a clean install of Home Edition. I didnt realize I had to delete the showing partition and now i have XP Pro and Home Edition on my laptop. Its using up a whole lot of space so I have to do another clean install. I went to an online help forum called computing.net and they told me To boot from the cd-rom drive, delete the partition, format the hard drive, and setup would copy all the XP Home install files to the hard drive. They also told me after the reboot (after format and stuff), to remove the disc or not press the key to boot from cd drive. They also said that later in setup, setup will ask for the XP Home disc to get setup files and click cancel when it asks. is it because these files are already copied to the hard drive?

365574 2005-06-20 21:27:00 Yeah well it depends really. If you want the XP Home install to take the place of the XP Pro install then yes you would have to do a clean install including a format. Of course this also means your will have to repartition the current hard drive... if you only want one partition that is. XP Home does store some files on the hard drive but I think you may still need the CD for one or two instances I cannot but sure. I think the folder those guys were referring to was the i386 folder which is a system folder and hidden by default.

Personally I would do the reformat and clean install don't go through this file copy stuff, my advice to you is to do the install as it was intended that way you elimnate any other possible nasties that may arise from a dubioius install method.

365575 2005-06-20 21:29:00 so i wouldnt press cancel then is what you are saying? i would search for the folders even though this would be later in the setup after i deleted the partition? bringyourownbomb070 (8384)
365576 2005-06-20 21:31:00 also i made it so i cant access XP Pro so it would be impossible for the spyware and adware to come back. all i can still see from XP Pro are old setup and program files, and old documents. bringyourownbomb070 (8384)
365577 2005-06-20 23:38:00 Ok let me ask this... what exactly do you want?

1) Laptop with XP Home only

2) Laptop with XP Pro only

3) Laptop with XP Home and Pro

For either of options 1 and 2 the best thing to do is to delete all existing partitions and do a clean install.

For option 3 you will have 2 different partitions for each OS BUT please note also that if you have both XP Home and XP Pro running you MUST INSTALL all you application software for each OS verison

So that means you will have to log into both Home and Pro and install the software. The programs will not run in XP Pro if you installed them under Home and conversely the same is true for XP Home.

I hope that makes sense

cheers

365578 2005-06-21 00:38:00 i just want a laptop with XP Home only. so i was going to boot from the cdrom drive, setup should start, delete the 1 partition listed(only 1)format the HD,and wouldnt all the setup and XP home files copy to the hard drive? is that why i have to click cancel everytime the setup asks for the XP Home CD? bringyourownbomb070 (8384)
365579 2005-06-21 01:02:00 What Chiefnz is trying to say is you dont need to cancel when it asks for the cd just leave it in there Overdrive_5000 (4950)

It won't copy the CD to the HDD, just what files it needs to do the install. If you want the lot, when its done you manually copy the i386 folder over to the HDD.
This is only if other files are needed later and you don't want to have to re insert the CD.
