366331 2005-06-23 09:13:00 I want to change the hdd on a thinkpad 600e from a 6 gig to a 10 gig. I'm not 100% sure of the condition of the 10 gig. Can someone tell me how to test it. Can I just simply swap the drives? Current os is xp. Joe Blogs (35)
366332 2005-06-23 09:23:00 I believe its auto detect. To be certain hit the hotkey during bootup .. it tell you what it is on screen.

To test HDD, go to a HDD website and download file. ie.. IBM.com or Seagate.com, I prob go with the earlier one.

366334 2005-06-23 09:33:00 Um.. if you got a new HDD its empty right? So you have to reinstall winXP on your new HDD.

Or are you wanting to reload or copy one HDD to the other? If so, some more expert pple may be able to advise you on this.

366335 2005-06-23 09:42:00 I'm not 100% sure of the condition of the 10 gig hdd. Its second hand and should be okay, but I would like to test it. What I am asking is: If I remove the current hdd and replace with the 10 gig, will that tell me anything about its condition and do I run any risks by doing this. Joe Blogs (35)
366336 2005-06-23 09:48:00 Nope, go for it.
All winXP are on the HDD. So if you take the HDD out and put in another. At the end just swap it back....

I assume the other HDD has the winXP on it .. then it can boot. Try it out. If that HDD was for a diff laptop you may not be able to boot as all the system files are for anothe PC. You can't boot another laptop's HDD on your laptop with windows NT platform windows. I have tried it. But you can make do with win9x but get all error screens but provided if you can fix those, you can.

So ... in all, using another laptop's HDD in yours, you can try, no harm as you can re swap the HDD back again, but I doubt the HDD will boot even if its got winxp on it.

Your question: if you boot the bios (not windows) with the new used HDD. You can go into IBM Bios and do a Hardware HDD test. Not comprehensive but still a test nevertheless. But if you can't get into winXP itself you can't do the comprehensive tests. But ... hangon. I think with the IBM HDD test software it may run on a bootable floppy so you may be able to test the HDD ... refer to IBM's download. It doesn't boot winixp you see...... Check IBM online out......

366337 2005-06-23 10:08:00 IBM HDD software, yes its boottable (www-307.ibm.com)

2 floppy is required I think. If IBM restricts this to some manufactured HDDs then go to your HDD manufacturer to get that file ....
