365985 2005-06-22 01:36:00 My desktop is chokka full of shortcut icons, and I vaguely recall hearing it can affect graphics performance - is this true?

Reason I ask is that I'm playing a game lately that demands system specs way under what I've got, but the mouse movement is really laggy.

Thx for any insight.

365986 2005-06-22 01:45:00 My desktop is chokka full of shortcut icons, and I vaguely recall hearing it can affect graphics performance - is this true?yes, exspecially if runing default ican cache. however it normally dosn't affect a game that runs full screen and even if you tweaked the ican cache and remove a lot of the icons it won't increase performance much.

that exspected. get a better pc. if the pc is only just under spec (eg your frame rate isn't taotally pathic (under 20fps) ) you might be able to overclock your pc and get it to run a bareable rate.

365987 2005-06-22 02:20:00 "icon cache"? What's that?

But it's strange, because as said, my system is way over the minimum and/or recommended specs for the game.

I can't see what frame-rate has to do with it, because it's mostly a static game (Rome:Total War) and my FR is acceptable in online dynamic games, eg America's Army.

But yeah, what's the Icon Cache... that may be my answer.

Thx.

365988 2005-06-22 02:25:00 sorry i miss read part of your post.

check out chachman (http://www.outertech.com/) for tweaking ican cache.

whats the specs of the game and your pc specs ?

is the game a new one or has it just suddenly gone laggy?

365989 2005-06-22 02:56:00 "Is the game new?"

It's relatively new... came out near end of last year.

Specs required:
PIII 1Ghz and all the usual eg DirectX9, enough hard drive space etc etc.

I'm using a PIV 2.4. My system's weak-point is the graphic card, but it's good enough to play other more graphics-intensive games.

Cacheman app looks good - I might try it, but I'm thinking it would need to be running in the background, which is not a good thing when playing FPS's.

365990 2005-06-22 03:06:00 cachman dosn't need to run in the background. it can be used to adjust a few cache settings.

"Is the game new?" i mean "how long have you had it installed? was it playing ok before?

what graphics card do you have? what does thre game require?

also what size ram and type of ram do you have?

don't forget some p4 systems actually run slower than a p3 1ghz so its important to mention all the specs.

365991 2005-06-22 03:14:00 My vid is a GeForce FX5200. (Yeah I know it's crapola)

My Ram is DDR (um 3200 I think) 512 MB

I installed the game about a month ago, and the problem has been the same always.

Thx for your input - I'll try Cacheman.

365992 2005-06-22 05:24:00 If i'm thinking of the same game, the specs are way understated. with the minimum specs, you can only run it at a horrible res & with hardly any units. Even my friend with a 3200+, 1gig DDR400, 9600 pro has trouble running it in 1024*768 Greven (91)

Don't bother with the cache thingy. Ditch the graphics card....thats the problem.

Nope... if I can run more graphics intensive games on this card then this can't be the issue. FPS require a lot more than RTS games.

Anyway, the graphics card is due to be chucked soon.
