2005-06-21 23:22:00 | I have been using broadband for a few months in my main pc. Now I also have a laptop which is wireless enabled. Can someone enlighten me with regards to the best wireless router to share my internet connection? | madan284 (7145) | |
2005-06-22 00:34:00 | I use a Dynalink RTA300 adsl router for access to the internet. Plugged into that is a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point. My wireless enabled laptop accesses the internet through the WAP. Very simple set up, and I have been very satisfied with both Dynalink and Linksys products. | John H (8) | |
2005-06-22 02:40:00 | How much does this setup cost and does it allow sharing of other devices like printers? Thanks

2005-06-22 03:05:00 | Yes, it does allow sharing of printers. However, it means that the PC that has the printer attached has to be on for the other WLAN PC to use the printer. I am often away travelling so this restricted others in the family who wanted to print when my PC was off so I recently bought a DickSmith parallel print server and that has solved the problem. Now the laptop and the family computer can use the printer whether or not the main PC is on. As far as cost is concerned, I always buy from Ascent these days. On their website the model that superceded my Dynalink RTA 300 is the RTA770, ADSL Modem, Router, 4-Port 10/100Mbps Switch, priced at $154.77 GST inc, and the Linksys WAP54G, Wireless Access Point, 54Mbps, 802.11b/g is presently on special at $133.88 GST inc. The DSE print server costs $158 if you want to go that way (i.e. to make the printer always available). I have been assuming all along that when you say "broadband" you are using something like JetStream, and that is what I based this on. I have no experience with cable so my opinion may be useless. I also don't know what kind of modem you are currently using - depending upon your model, you may be able to do things cheaper than I have suggested.

My Brother laser has USB/Parallel/Network but I use the Network connection to print from each PC here at home. Means the printer can stay on when needed and no PC is needed to support it. |

2005-06-22 20:51:00 | Firstly, I use Jetstream on USB Alcatel Modem. My printer does not support networking and is connected through a USB Port. I was thinking I would need something like the Netgear Router/modem from Ascent (the one costing around $214). Like to know your opinions on this. Thanks.

2005-06-23 01:33:00 | I would get a wireless router with usb print server . You plug in your modem, computer, and printer . You can also connect to the network with your notebook . Something like this ( . ascent . co . nz/mn-product-spec . asp?pid=9334139" target="_blank">www . ascent . co . nz) [Edit:] Just reread your last post does your modem also have an ethernet port?? And can you give the model number or a link to the netgear

2005-06-24 00:04:00 | No, my modem is only USB with no ethernet port. That print server in Ascent seems to be a good option, but doesn't that need a modem? I can't see any inbuilt one. Thanks.
