2005-06-21 12:09:00 | Was looking up programs on my old Win98SE HD (which is now an E drive in my XP HomeSP2 setup) when a Firefox dialog asked me if I wanted to create a profile name or remain with the default user. As I'm the only user, I wasn't too bothered which, but committed the major sin of not taking enough notice & first checking what - if anything - had been set originally. I THINK I put in my first name...Ashamed to say I was concentrating on the task in hand. My next Firefox reboot gave me an empty Bookmarks folder & a previous Homepage. So I thought I could find my profile & re-install (from memory, in Desktop/Documents?) but can't see anything that looks promising there. Am I missing something obvious - or have I managed a major stuff-up here?

Double click the shortcut and a Profile Manager for Firefox should appear. Select probably the "Default Profile" one and click "Start Firefox". When all is well remove the -p you added from the Firefox shortcut target. | sal (67) | ||
2005-06-21 15:07:00 | No luck with your method so far, sal. But thanks for the effort. Can only locate a page called Profile - not Profile Manager - & it doesn't give me a Start Firefox option. Have fiddled around so long I've now lost my shortcut as well - so I think it's a retry tomorrow somehow. The eyes are starting to glaze over...

2005-06-21 20:04:00 | Just got Start > Run. Enter in firefox.exe -profilemanager - click OK. Select the profile with the name of "Default" and click "Start Firefox". Check that this is your old profile with all the bookmarks and themes etc. If it is, then close Firefox and go back to Start > Run to access the Profile Manager again, and this time select and delect the second profile. Alternatively, you can highlight the "Default" profile and then put a tick in "Don't ask at startup" so that by default the "Default" profile will always be used when Firefox is opened. Further information: How To Manage Profiles (www.mozilla.org) To reinstate your shortcut, just navigate to the Firefox folder under Program Files and right-click on the firefox.exe and select send shortcut to desktop.

2005-06-22 02:51:00 | Thanks for that detailed answer, Jen. Yes, I did need my hand held that much in the end. Even with your detailed info, I still found myself going around in the same circles (didn't get Start Firefox option anywhere) until I went through the info in your link - and found my mistake. I hadn't closed Firefox completely before starting the remedy. As I had the PF1 page running in the background to check back with, I kept being led to the wrong place.(And in my ignorance, I thought I was smart, keeping my reference handy) Such a simple thing, yet so much frustration... So I'm posting this for anyone else with the same problem - bearing the googlebots in mind.
