But that won't be activated just by setting a jpg as background . As for your initial post, Run a benchmark, then disable "show icons", run the benchmark again, be amazed by the fact that there is no measable difference . . . . If you read the "cunning tricks for a better score" segment at Madonion they recomend turning off your backgraound no matter what format its in, removing all icons, and setting your refresh rate to as low as possible, but even when all this steps are taken they add up to a barely measuable increase in performance, certainly none that would be apparent in gameplay . |

| 366017 | 2005-06-24 04:29:00 | I like my desktop with a background, but if the original image is like 1600x1200 I use photoshop to save it as psd then resize & trim it down to 1280x1024, then save it as a png for background. Saves using the windows 'stretch to fit' option which distorts the picture anyway and probably slows it down a little? | E|im (87) | ||
| 366018 | 2005-06-24 05:51:00 | Just convert your wallpapers to . bmp to have your cake and eat it . . . The only problem is that . bmp files are vastly bigger than . jpgs and would hog quite a lot of the system's resources . Out of the frying pan and into the fire methinks . |

Not so long ago I was unable to set a . jpg image as my desktop background for some reason that I have forgotten and had to search all over the internet to find a fix . I have forgotten the fix as well but I do know I had to enable the active desktop option, or something like that . I could have . bmp images but not . jpg ones until I fixed it . Darn this useless sieve-like memory . . . :waughh: |

| 366020 | 2005-06-24 10:38:00 | What kind of settings are you trying to run the game at? You might want to try some lower resolutions and the like. I'm going to back up Thomas and say that I can understand why he would not want to troubleshoot computers with games installed. I sure don't like supporting computers where Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are used on it, or the large majority of P2P programs. |

I sure don't like supporting computers where Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are used on it, or the large majority of P2P programs. That is a bit harsh - most people don't know any better. If you explain everything to them and install alternatives (and teach them how to use them), but they still do everything wrong, THEN it is perfectly reasonable to refuse to support them. |

Anhow, fired up Help and suport and done a search for active desktop To add Web content to your desktop Right-click a blank area on the desktop, and then click Properties . On the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop . On the Web tab, click New, and then follow the instructions on your screen . Notes You must be connected to the Internet to add active Web content to your desktop . To browse Microsoft's Desktop Gallery Web site, in the New Desktop Item Wizard, click Visit Gallery . The New Desktop Item Wizard opens when you click New on the Web tab . To select a different Web site, type the Web site address, or click Browse to locate it . And thats all she had, Not anything I would associate with just setting a background, Usually I see it activated when spyware has set a webpage over the desktop . . . saying Your computer is infected (no kidding) click here to gain control of it . |

| 366023 | 2005-06-24 10:56:00 | Just tried it on 3 handy computers, all accepted jpg wallpapers with no issue, and on one I managed to makle google the default background, which could be quite handy dandy.... :p Though I am now wondering if its a service that can be disabled, and doing so may disable the ability to set a jpg without messing around a bit |
