| 366005 | 2005-06-23 02:08:00 | I don't know if things have improved but when I was semi retired I spent a lot of time helping people with computers and only charged $10/hour. As I generally made it a social occasion it often worked out at about $4/hour. But if the client had games on and had problems then I refused to help unless they removed the games. They could go to more qualified expensive help otherwise. My own personal belief is that games have no place on computers. Except Freecell of course. Since deciding not to play it any more I have played 1200 games. I need help. Tom Nice price unless you're trying to make a living. Games are the whole purpose of modern PCs. If they weren't we'd still be running DOS1.0 and using a TRS80. I can fix your Freecell problem, A simple bit of deleting the main file would have you free of gaming and suffering withdrawal symptoms in no time. |

The DOS actually booted from a ROM. I know, not an accurate analogy. Just trying to think of the oldest O/S and computer off the top of my head. But you get the point. Games are what drives the hardware industry. :p |

| 366008 | 2005-06-23 04:04:00 | Games run the industry. Agreed. I remembered listening to a manufacturers rep during a computer lecture pointing out that if we had a business with about 5 employees and wanted to have a computer to run it then we should go out and look for something in the second hand market for about $50 - it would do everything. But if we had a son who wanted to play the latest DOOM on it then we had better accept that several thousand dollers were needed. Thank you games enthusiasts for making it possible for us to have these powerful computers. But I still miss DOS (Actually I used DrDOS). As for Freecell - yes I tried deleting it off the computer - worked pretty well for a day or so until withdrawal symtoms came in. But I gues I'm not the only sufferer. Tom |

| 366009 | 2005-06-23 08:27:00 | My desktop is chokka full of shortcut icons, and I vaguely recall hearing it can affect graphics performance - is this true? Reason I ask is that I'm playing a game lately that demands system specs way under what I've got, but the mouse movement is really laggy. Thx for any insight. (XP Pro SP1) let's swing violently back on topic here, you're probably thinking of the age-old rhetoric that Active Desktop = performance hit Still seems to hold true, a lot of my workmates (who should know better) were amazed when I instructed them to disable active desktop - simply because they didnt need it, it usually turns on when you use a .jpg for a wallpaper. Just convert your wallpapers to .bmp to have your cake and eat it... |

| 366010 | 2005-06-23 16:16:00 | You made people remove their games? $4 an hour sounds about right for that level of help. Rofl   I would be charging him $4. Thomas01, that's the most disturbing thing I've heard all year. :horrified :horrified Metla what did you do to calm the lady down when you removed Kazaa from it? That would be a rather tricky situation. Install K++ or whatever (illegal) or install another P2P application... |

| 366011 | 2005-06-23 17:38:00 | Out of curiosity - a very basic question. Did that mean she then couldn't play the music she'd download via Kazaa? Or once it's on the HD, it'll play with any music software? |

| 366012 | 2005-06-23 22:07:00 | Or once it's on the HD, it'll play with any music software? Yes. ;) Kazaa is mainly just the tool for getting the music, etc in the first place. |

| 366013 | 2005-06-23 23:01:00 | Ah, Kazaa trouble! I got into trouble with this as well. Told someone to let Adaware do its thing on her spyware ridden system and it broke Kazaa! Oh dear, it was all my fault telling her to run crap programs. No doubt she has a big new set of spyware, now (I hope!!). | linw (53) | ||

Install K++ or whatever (illegal) or install another P2P application... Nah, I pretty much told her I just done what I had to do,she was welcome to reinstall Kazzaa, Its her comp after all. It still didn't go down well, though I had done my best to explain why it was removed, The old girl had just had Jetstream connected, Which didn't work, The telecom tech saw what state her comp was in and had it sent to me for a fix. Seems she wanted Jetstream to get faster dl speeds over Kazaa....Which was now gone.Lmao. |
