365919 2005-06-21 20:08:00 The following request is made under protest, the wife directed me to ask this from the "guys who know better and who you should ask before you fiddle around". I offered to do a Google but she said NO, ask the brains trust. So here is the question:

She saw that Winzip have a 28-day free period before you need to pay. Any good, free prgrams doing the same out there? What would you suggest? She is a schoolteacher who needs a program like Winzip a lot (teaches TIM)

Thanks guys

365920 2005-06-21 21:18:00 Hi Sarel,

I have been using Winzip 9 for more than the 28 days and it still works, all it does is keep tabs on how many times you use it. Never had to register it yet. There is another called 7zip but I didn't like it as much. BTW thanks for the games, the Trainz one is not easy, been derailed a few times because of excessive speed on the turns lol.

Cheers Fred ;)

Pleasure and enjoy. I hated the bloody game - too technical for me. Same with the other that will reach you by today.

365925 2005-06-21 21:57:00 Win RAR
If someone doesn't want to pay for winzip, what makes you think they will pay for winrar?
I don't know why anyone would use winrar these days - 7zip has better security & about the same compression abilities. If you just want speed & a good interface, keep using winzip & just ignore the nagging.

365926 2005-06-21 22:05:00 If someone doesn't want to pay for winzip, what makes you think they will pay for winrar? Both Winzip and Win RAR will work after 28 days for free.
With Winzip, if you pay for it you get rid of the annoying splash screen.... like Opera with its ads. The splash screen doesnt affect the way the utility functions. It still works fully.
I have the free version of Win RAR as well and it still functions fully

365928 2005-06-22 00:12:00 i prefer winRAR myself. its dosn't have that annoying splash screen winzip has and compression is far better. with the free ver there are a couple of advanced features turned off tho i have never needed them. i tried 7-zip, its not bad but i found winrar has better compression. tweak'e (69)
