| 365827 | 2005-06-21 10:28:00 | HI I recently reformatted one of my two computers at home. Now, I cannot get my network going again. I have a Billion ADSL VPN Firewall router, 4 port, and i installed it about a fortnight before i reformatted. It worked then, but now it wont, despite all my efforts. I have Norton Internet Security 2004, and windows 2000 The Computer i formatted has the same name it used to have before i formatted, but the other computer refuses to even acnologe its existance. My internet works fine, but not my network. I have set up the network before, but only when it was 2 computers conected by a cable, not by a router. Does anyone know mhat the problem is? |

| 365829 | 2005-06-21 12:12:00 | What OS is the other computer running? win2k is the best version of windows so far, but it takes a lot of tweeking to make it play nice with other operating systems. If the other computer is running winXP, check the QOS settings on both. Make sure that your local network is whitelisted by the firewalls on both computers (assuming the other one has a software firewall) |

| 365835 | 2005-06-22 09:07:00 | Have you tried pinging the ip of the other computer (with all firewalls turned off)? I've encountered a problem before where I could ping the other computer, but had to play round with gpedit to get file sharing to work. Are you manually setting the IP addresses, or are you letting the router set them via DHCP? |

| 365836 | 2005-06-22 10:29:00 | Once again I would like to give good ol Mr Gates a firm slapping. :badpc: Don't rush to blame somebody (anybody) else Ron, go look in the mirror, take a deep breath, then go back to your computers and look to see where your configuration error or omission lies. It worked before you reformatted, ergo your system is capable of communication, therefore the problem is either something you have done, or not done as the case may be. Have you looked at the PF1 networking FAQ? I disagree that W2K doesn't play nicely with other OSs, I have a 6 computer network with a mix of W2K, W98 & W95, all happily sharing the same two printers and one ADSL connection without problems. Adding new computers takes but a few minutes. You have to be very methodical about your setup and make sure all are set up the same apart from their IP address. I also enable netbios which apparently makes drive sharing easier, but I'm no expert so I could be wrong on that. Cheers Billy 8-{) Edit: I also leave DHCP disabled and set all IPs manually. |
