I think we need more information to actually help here.
Possibly you have a Norton ( Symantec ) problem.

I would suggest that you uninstall all norton products at this point after getting a better antivirus product.

If you are using WinXP turn the firewall on in there then download AVG or Avast to replace the antivirus. The "crrrrrrkkk noise" you hear is normally Norton checking the floppy drive.

Do not get on the Internet until such time as you have a working antivirus product. If on dial up for the Internet it is unlikely you will need a firewall. If on broadband then I certainly recommend a firewall.

I use EzTrust for my Antivirus but you have to pay for that and there are free ones out there. AVG Version 7 will work

Bear in mind that my advice is based on no knwoledge of what you current system is.

366767 2005-06-24 10:19:00 odds are you are infected with something which may explain why nortons is turning off.
it also may explain the delay before net access, tho the same thing can happen if there is a problem with the lan card.

check your firewall for any unknown programs accessing the net. then run on online anutvirus scan or install another antivirus.

366768 2005-06-24 10:20:00 Not a fan of Norton, although this does not sound like the problem.
Something is slowing up so reboot using F8 and select "Step by step Confirmation". Have a good look at what it is loading. Alternatively try "hijack-this"

and see what's loading
