366518 2005-06-24 04:57:00 I currently have one stick of 512 MB DDR PC2100 266MHZ in one of the three slots on my mobo. (Soltek SL-KT400-C/KT400-A4C )

I would like to put another stick of 512 in... Do I have to put pc2100 266mhz in? Or would any speed work? Does mixing speeds cause any conflicts? What is the best combination?

Thanks.

M.

366519 2005-06-24 05:11:00 Depends what the mobo can go up to for ram.

If it only supports 266, and u chuck 400 DDR in, it will most probably run at 266 ram speed.

Google says....
SOCKET A, VIA KT400, FSB 333/266/200, DDR 400/333/266, 6CH AUDIO, ATX

So its find to run two differnt speed sticks in different slots???

366521 2005-06-24 05:53:00 Yup it should be alright, since it supports both 266 and 400 DDR ram.

Just make sure the mobo can handle 1GB of ram, if you do decide to get 2 512MB simms.

And u have 2k/XP +. 98 and older OS's maybe able to use 1GB, but u have to edit autoexec.bat I think it is, in order for it to work. Or it'll crash.

366522 2005-06-24 05:59:00 wont the mobo automaticly slow down the faster ram so that they run at the same speed? CyberGeek (8008)
366523 2005-06-24 06:07:00 most of the time the motherboard will run the ram at the speed of the slowest one. however sometimes it dosn't and will try to run the slow one at a higher speed causeing all sorts of fun ;) tweak'e (69)

So to avoid possible problems/complications it would be best to get the same speed ram?

How likey if I did get faster speed ram is it to cause problems?

Thanks.

366525 2005-06-24 10:13:00 the only way to avoid problems/complications is to use the exact same ram as you already have. however thats near on impossible so just use whatever you can get and worry about any problems when/if they arrise. tweak'e (69)
366526 2005-06-24 10:44:00 If you are planning on replacing your current ram with faster stuff sometime in the near future, then get the faster RAM & your motherboard should run it at the slower speed so you won't get any problems, but if you are planning on keeping your existing RAM, buying faster stuff is a waste of money. not quite...trouble is you may not even FIND the slower ram and in a lot of cases its dearer than the faster stuff (new that is not 2nd hand)

however you do make a point....it might be better to sell your old ram and buy new faster ram.
