366379 2005-06-23 09:43:00 I have swapped the original 40 gig hard drive with win xp home on my daughters Dell 2400 for a fully formatted 80 gig hard drive with win xp pro from another computer. The Dell computer now will not start and comes up with the words "we apologise for the inconvenience....etc etc"

What can I do to make the new hard drive work?

366380 2005-06-23 09:47:00 Did your dell come with a restore disk? Cause if it did i imagine that they would have placed files in a hidden partition for restoration. If the bios cant find these files the whole computer gets into a muddle. CyberGeek (8008)
366381 2005-06-23 09:56:00 I had a horrid suspicion some one would say that. I cunningly told my daughter to leave the disks in Dunedin and I am in Wellington. Damn. MACIAN (6176)
366382 2005-06-23 09:59:00 if you felt comfortable and knew what type of motherboard u had, you could possibly try flashing your bios with a generic bios. Unfortunetly, if done wrong this can had all sorts of adverse effects... such as turning your computer into a stylist door stop or paper weight. CyberGeek (8008)
366383 2005-06-23 10:02:00 of course it wont start, the os is setup for different hardware. if you are lucky you might get it to boot into safe mode.

time to format reinstall.

366385 2005-06-23 10:14:00 i doubt it a bios thing. most likly a message from OS. it sounds like the standard crash message.
restore disks are often tied to the drive or bios but i've never head of a bios tied to a hardrive before....tho with OEM's you never know......

366386 2005-06-23 10:21:00 try reinstalling xp then, otherwise ring up dell and in the off chance that you manage to get hold of someone who knows what they're talking about they'll be able to help you through the steps CyberGeek (8008)
