366699 2005-06-24 07:39:00 Run scandisk and do a surface scan. Or chkdsk. Depending on your O/S.
And depending on the brand, the manufacturers have HDD utilities you can download.

Great product - use it all the time
Also, if you know the brand of your disk, go to the manufacturer's website and download their specific tool to check it. Cheers :)

The original poster asked for FREE which is word I see a lot here.

Spinrite to my knowledge has never been free.
Your second comment makes more sense.

366702 2005-06-24 10:09:00 Quite correct, Elephant - my mistake, not free.
But a good program anyway - has got me out of lots of problems.

Agreed. I paid for it and I use it from time to time.

366704 2005-06-24 10:20:00 UBCD, check my sig. A collation of a bunch of free tools on one disc with a handy boot menu, including a lot of manufacturers and generic hard drive diagnosis and installation tools. Based on isolinux methodology which should appeal especially to open source nuts ;) whetu (237)

366706 2005-06-25 06:32:00 Honestly if it's old, why bother. A new drive costs sod all these days anyway, giving out second hand hardware in a business situation (as you've implied by using the word client) is extremely poor form.

Even worse if it's a drive you've pulled out of someone else's machine as there will be traces of their data left on it.

It cost Quay Computer's 10's of 1000's of dollars in lost earnings from doing it to my work.
