367273 2005-06-27 01:27:00 Does anyone know the maximum size hard drive that windows xp will support? I heard it was 160GB. lance4k (4644)
367274 2005-06-27 01:34:00 No its 137 GB without SP1 or 2 .

After either one of these have been installed, it can be as big as u want the hdd to be . You can have 200gb/250gb + .

. microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com

It also depends on how old your system / bios is .

The older it is (your system), the less chance of it recognising a big hdd .

And formatting in NTFS helps . If u have 2000 or XP + .

367276 2005-06-27 02:05:00 I get away with :
4 / 200 gig on RAID 0+1,
4 / 200 gig on JBOD and
1 / 40 gig for my opsys...
all on XP-PRO, SP's up to date. (I didn't build it, don't ask how)

367277 2005-06-27 05:00:00 Depends on the type of file system you are using...

FAT32 supports up to 2 TeraBytes
Natively NTFS will support 2 TB and with cluster size tweaking will handle up to 16 ExaBytes

It will read them once created, but . . it won't let you create the things . FAT32 is fairly useless on big partitions anyway .

See what MS have to say about fat limitations in XP ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314463" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com)

367279 2008-01-26 04:23:00 I have a 500Gb drive, and just installed XP on it, but only see the 137Gb by default. So, how do I now either increase the size of the existing partition, or add a new partition to the drive without messing up my fresh install? Can somebody walk me through the process? mikrobson (8424)

You'll need something like Gparted or Magic Partition .

Is SP1 or 2 installed?

Whats the specs of this system? How old is it? Is the BIOS updated on it?
