367270 2005-06-27 02:49:00 Another thing..I don't know for sure, but most modern mobos have a small program to run a temp and fans speed monitor on your desktop. I have one called "SMARTGUARDIAN' by my mobo company SOYO. On my other Dells, I have been successful adding on a 3rd party monitor too. That way I can get realtime temps and fan speeds, if the mobo supports that input/output. At least use it to get the temps.

I process a lot of videos and MP3's at 192, and I like the extra insurance that the fans give me. My wife uses the MIDI a lot for her synthesizers and keyboards, and I too like to use the FX for my guitars. So, I have a lot of heat-building things running here. This puter is almost never off..but running some sorta digital dialog somewhere all the time.

I have a friend who is a pro photographer who likes to "seed" file swith me all the time, and he likes the size of my drives as he is shooting weddings and quinceneras all the time; sometimes three or four a day. I save all the files for him as a back-up in case he loses anything in his system in the field. It is not unusual for him to shoot over 1,000 pixs a day. And he demands very high resolutions for his customers. :dogeye:

367271 2005-06-27 07:47:00 best/cheapest way to do it is to make it efficent.

fill all rear fan locations with fans. leaving any out can actually make things worse as the unused fan location becomes an air intake shortcutting the air flow.

then check the air intakes, it must flow enough air. its quite comman to find cases where the front cover blocks most of the airflow off. if the air vent is only on the bottom of the front cover then make sure it clears the floor. very comman to see it blocked off by carpet.

in most cases you do not need front fans. the only time there are handy if you have a poor case that dosn't flow air very well or if the air flow is being shortcutted by side fans.

367272 2005-06-27 17:40:00 tweak'e . . . . I agree . . those side fans are not the right thing to do as they just confuse the flow . :waughh:

Even though I have one (because it's lighted with blue led's and looks pretty), I think it causes more incorrect airflow than it helps .

Anyway, I like the idea of having the primary airflow from a 4 inch (120mm?) front fan blowing over the HDD's and then the rest of the fans performing exhaust work .

My vid card has 2 fans built on, and the sound card has 1 and as it is they have to just get air from wherever it comes, and that is the flow from the front 4 incher .

The chipset and cpu have fans and water cooling so I don't really worry about them much . (My kids built this as a gamer puter, and it has a lot of overclocking capacities and since I don't go there, I am not too sure how it all works . I just enjoy the reliability of running cold . . . now if I can get this nearer to 0 degrees Kelvin!)

My power supply has it's own fans (silent they are) and has it's own intake/exhaust route that I don't mess with .

I ran a manometer into the case to see if I had pressure or vacuum in it, and I actually have 1" H2O vacuum (not a lot, but significant in a non-positive displacement fan application) . As the Enermax case has louvers all around the top of the tower and another fan mount in the top of the case exhausting, I feel that a 4 incher is a very good idea as it keeps the case air flowing even with all the dynamic and static vents it has .

BTW: during cold months here, if I just have this puter running and the room it's in has no open windows, the room temperature will climb over 80F/29 . 4C degrees without any heat from the central system . .
