367049 2005-06-25 13:15:00 Can someone please help me with settings in avg for paradise.net.nz, as I have been going around in circles for over 2 hours, between avg help, avg forum, and reading old posts here, and I still don't think it is working as there is no message on the bottom of posts I send out or receive. I am running out of patience, and nearly makes me go and renew the Nortons I uninstalled last week.

Windows XP, XP firewall off, Zone alarm on, avg latest, Oe and Firefox. Tia when I still have hari to pull out. Shall check messages again in the morning, as I am freezing, so it must be bed time.

Ps, Iknow there have been heaps of posts about this, but I can't still sus it out.

367050 2005-06-25 13:22:00 first check the email protection in ZA is off.

now what AVG email setup do you have installed ? plugins or pop3 scanner?
are you useing dailup or lan connection for your net? make sure AVG is set to use the correct one.
lastly make sure avg is allowed through the firewall.

367051 2005-06-25 13:35:00 Are you not able to send and receive messages.
If you disable the mail scanning you will have less trouble.
Go to AVG control centre and open e-mail scanning
Click on Disable Plugin
Click on Configure and UNTICK Check incoming and Check outgoing mail
Click on OK

Also check in Outlook Express Tools/Options
Under Connections Tab make sure "Hangup after sending and receiving is unticked.

367052 2005-06-25 13:36:00 Do know that plug in is there, but have personal test configeration selected at present, zone alarm one is turned off, I already checked that, there is a thing to turn plug ins off, but haven't done it well haven't ticked it anyway, but something I did think was weird is that the pop3 port is listed as 5200 and smtp is listed as 5100 which I thought was weird.

Ok, re reading your post, I most likely have both pop3 and plug ins working, and I am on dial up and yes, avg is allowed through the firewall.

367053 2005-06-25 13:39:00 Safari, what is the use of a virus program, if I am not going to scan my mail? Yes, at present I can send and receive mail, but don't think avg is scanning, in or out. supergran (108)
367054 2005-06-25 13:44:00 Mail scanning in AVG causes a lot of problems.
All this does is scan your mail while downloading, it will still protect you if you try to open an infected file. If your ISP is scanning your mail you are not likely to get a virus anyway.
You know to scan attachments before opening them anyway don't you.
If you really want a working mail scan I suggest you uninstall AVG and get another AV program

367055 2005-06-25 13:48:00 Yes, I always save them to my desktop, scan them, then open, I just thought it was an added safe guard. Thanks anyway. supergran (108)
367056 2005-06-25 13:51:00 Just reread you previous.
If you are sending and receiving then no problem.
If scanning is active it will only give a message if in Configure where Check mail boxes are the boxes Certify Mail have to be checked as well.
This can sometimes cause problems as well as it causes all messages to be sent with a Certified attachment

367057 2005-06-25 13:58:00 They are both checked, which is why I started this merry go around, lol, cos my daughter told me that there was no certifacation on the bottom of my emails like she gets when she sends hers. supergran (108)

If its certified would you trust the attachment ?
I never trust attachments, even though they are so called ceritified by avirus program.
Ive seen virus's that actually add this certifaction to emails.
If you really want this perhaps, you could make up a signature that is added to your emails when sent seeing as AVG does seem to do this.
