366990 2005-06-25 08:30:00 Hey,
Im trying to get smoothwall installed on my old 166, and have made the boot floppy disk things. The problem starts when it gets to the part where i press enter to install it, it gets stuck on
Loading vmlinuz..
The floppy light is still on, it still makes noise, but it doesnt get any further.
Any ideas?

366991 2005-06-25 09:46:00 Try a new floppy, Linux can be very fussy about floppy disks.
Or have a look at this

I trust the pc doesn't have a bootable cd-rom as you can install Smoothwall from cd directly.

366993 2005-06-25 23:29:00 if you want to install from a bootable cd but the pc doesnt support bootable cds, let me know I have a boot manager that when used will allow you to boot off cd even if the pc BIOS doesnt support this feature. It runs from a bootable floppy. I use it a lot on old pc's that dont support bootable cd's. beama (111)

It's not fussy. It just requires a perfect floppy to boot from. ;)

The various programmes which write bootable floppies take no notice of "mapped out" or ".BAD" sectors. They start at the first physical block and write to the end of the boot image. If there are any bad areas, they are used. They are not skipped.

I've usually had an "Error 10" when I've struck this, but whether you get a message might depend on how far the boot has gone before the bad spot is struck.

Do a full format of a floppy before using RAWRITE. (I usually do a scandisk as well ;).
