| 1387480 | 2014-11-01 04:02:00 | I have a WDC 1TB HDD that seems to be having issues. CrystalDisk reports "Caution (5) Current Sector Count:1". Should I transfer all my data folders to a 2TB HDD on the same computer? Backup the failing HDD if that's what it is to an external HDD and run chkdsk\f to see if I can correct the problem? |

Not Ideal simply because if something goes wrong ANY THING connected internally or externally can be fried if the worst happens. If the 1TB is the only location of the data and not backed up you run the risk of losing it. ANY HDD can fail at any time. The question you have to ask is "if the drive suddenly fails and all data lost without expensive data recovery, is it important or simply a Oh Bugger -- Oh Well" Making a backup image wont hurt, that way when the drive fails you wont lose everything. Did a job last week, the Laptop Drive suddenly failed with no warning, it was lucky for them they had a copy of all their important data and pictures ( thousands of them so they said) on another computer that was being used as a backup location. |

I have tried to copy some data to D: small ones have worked but larger ones only get some of the way through before stopping. My important data is safe (as can be) so I will now recover the backup to a good but smaller HDD. May invest in another 1 TB but I really don't have much to put on it. | Bryan (147) | ||

Sometimes using the official software from the manufacture itself would give you the most reliable result as I have experienced it myself. If you're yet to run the DLG test, here is the link to guide you further: wdc.custhelp.com Before running any test on the hard drive, I would recommend you to backup all the important data to avoid any risk on losing it. Once you done running the test, check on the same error again if there is any. Additionally, here is the link for full description of the error codes: support.wdc.com Do check it out and see how it goes. |

| 1387484 | 2014-11-03 03:39:00 | Thanks for the reply Raymond. I will certainly give it a go. At this time I think it is more a corruption that I might have instigated in the operating system. I will give your link its due and see what I can do. I really do not want to throw away a 1TB HDD if I can help it. Thanks again, I will let you know in due course. | Bryan (147) | ||
