1374329 2014-05-07 05:19:00 We all know about the crazy price of ink cartridges versus new printers.

But the same phenemena exists with Brother Laser printers.

A brand new Brother HL2240 Laser is $129 at Warehouse Stationary

A replacement drum for it is $145.00, then you need toner as well.

A drum does 12,000 copies.

You may as well buy a new printer and get everything else eg rubber rollers etc new.

After 2 or 3 drums your printer will be on its way out.

Not only that but you can get the printer for $99 sometimes with cash back etc.

And you can buy After Market drums for about $50.

This is not only bad economics its bad for the environment, as I am on my 3rd Brother Laser all of basically the same model just for home use.

1374330 2014-05-07 06:00:00 Brother have just released a even more cheaper Basic laser printer ( USB only) - HL1110

Some places are selling it for under $80 normal price. (according to price spy) but normal retail is roughly $85 -$90.

brother currently have a $30 cashback on it as well, so that will bring it down to around $60

Wont tell you what the Wholesale price is :xmouth:

1374332 2014-05-07 07:43:00 The problem with Brother printers these days is that they show "Toner Low" very quickly. YouTube is your friend to fix this. I have a HL1440 at home here and we run the toner carts until they are empty.. paulw (1826)

1374334 2014-05-08 00:57:00 Sshh, they might hear you and make printers more expensive ;)

Have had the same brother laser printer for a while, medium usage. Gone through a few replacement toners, haven't had to change the drum yet. Personally pretty pleased with the cost, don't think its too bad.

1374335 2014-05-08 02:25:00 Yep, its madness.
the sensible thing for Brother to do , would be make the drum unit say $40 .
That way, customers will keep the printer and Brother will have the customer 'locked in' rather than them hunting for another printer

As is, consumers will find it cheaper to replace the printer, possibly for another brand . That cant be good for Brother.

My wholesale price is sometimes more than DSE etc sell for, or within $10 :-(

1374336 2014-05-08 03:02:00 My Brother Laser (black) the HL-2250DN was starting to put some extra marks from the Drum, looked at a replacement drum & Toner, would have been cheaper to buy a new unit.

Gave it a clean with some Isopropyl alcohol, good as gold now :)

Its all very well buying a replacement Printer, BUT you still have to get rid of the old ones. Got two colour lasers here, the toners in the Lexmark are empty, its a LOT cheaper to buy a new colour laser than replace the toners - trouble is the printer is a damn big heavy thing, not something you can put in the rubbish bin :(

Thats where these company's make their $$ - consumables.

1374338 2014-05-08 07:40:00 If you are looking at buying a new Laser Printer, particularly in comparison to replacing supplies for an existing one, make sure you ask if the new printer has a full-life Toner or just a 'starter' cartridge - often these bargains are not quite what they seem when the initial toner seems to run out very quickly, only because it was a 'starter cartridge' with usually about 30% capacity of the normal retail version.

And for some people, they will take social responsibility into account when deciding whether to continue with a perfectly serviceable existing machine which only needs Toner and/or Drum (and may only be a year or two old) vs a seemingly good deal on a replacement.

The amount of waste like this going into landfills etc is atrocious. I firmly believe that the full cost of the disposal (professional recycling) of things like Printers, Microwaves, TV's whatever and anything for that matter should be built into the purchase price, a levy if you like for its eventual disposal, then we'd see an end to these stupid bargain basement prices and premature end-of-life on perfectly serviceable items. That levy could significantly fund the recycling companies and make them more cost-effective, more employment in dismantling them etc. Just look at what comes in on the green e-days and how much of it is ultimately dumped, not 'recycled' at all.

Sure, upgrade a product for specific features, speed, lower running costs etc but I don't believe that exhausted supplies on a modern machine say less than about three years old is always good environmental or common sense.
