1374318 2014-05-07 04:45:00 Can anyone tell me what causes the blemishes on the apples in the photo? They don't seem to affect the taste, but they look weird. About half the crop on the one and only tree (Braeburn) seems to be affected.

1374322 2014-05-07 07:59:00 its a bug, and as its a sucking insect it causes damage to leaves and fruit........... harmless except visually.

1374323 2014-05-07 10:57:00 I looked at all those links - thanks. Looking again at the pics, it is perhaps not clear that the blemishes are quite raised - not just surface discolouration. Beetle, why do you say it is miridae? PCtek, I was about to say why capsid bug, and then I realized there was a slide show, and I think you are right. Tony (4941)

1374325 2014-05-07 20:56:00 They are the same bug................one is a UK page i looked for a NZ page but only got wikipediaOh, right. Thanks for the help. I was obviously using the wrong search terms as I never found any of those pages. Maybe because I had no idea what I was looking for. :) Tony (4941)
1374326 2014-05-07 21:13:00 LOL no worries....i knew it was a bug from my work (previous fruit picker / pruner and parks and reserves / council worker) but could not remember what it was called........ but new it was a bug not fungi or bacterial caused......... and i just put in apple blemish to images and went from there in google...... quite simple :)
it would most likely not get through a pack house to sell - or if it did it would be sold as a second or non export quality......... but its quite ok. you can cut that bit off and eat it no problems.......:) it just looks funny.
one of the few questions on pf1 i knew something about and could anwser........... :D

1374327 2014-05-07 22:46:00 All my fruit trees get regular spraying throughout the year with Eco-oil and then with copper oxychloride sprays. This gets rid of any mites and fungus problems. Any insect infestations get a dose of insecticide spray. A regular handful of fertiliser around the root zone works wonders too, especially for citrus, as a healthy tree is more resistant to invasion by pests.

If your citrus trees have unhealthy curly leaves, and the fruit has a brown scab on it, use the copper spray, and a good dose of fert and the effect is magic.
