1374295 2014-05-07 01:00:00 Recently I've been realizing that today's so called tech generation of youth actually seems to be the most vulnerable when it comes to protecting their pc's against viruses and malware. Being part of this new generation of youth myself I find myself regularly helping students in my class with tech problems I've noticed how many of these students who own their own laptops have kept the system in such poor condition. Just today I was trying to help a student convert an audio file to mp3 in audacity but that escalated too removing some rouge antivirus from her machine.

To be honest I feel that this new generation of tech connected youth is also the generation which needs the most help in protecting their pc's from viruses. If this is how the new generation are going to treat their pc's then I would hate to see the next generation.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think that today's youth need to be educated on the dangers of viruses and malware or do you think that they have a strong hold on the dangers of the internet already? Feel free to post your thoughts.

1374296 2014-05-07 01:47:00 Everyone who uses a PC needs to be aware of viruses and how to protect against them, no need to single out any particular group.
As for youth being tech savvy I don't think they are any more or less so than previous generations. Growing up with this stuff makes you very comfortable using it, that's not the same as understanding any of it.
It's not uncommon for kids to show their parents how to use a new device, and to figure out how to do things quickly. That's just familiarity not understanding.

I'm in my mid 40's, we've had colour TV since I was a kid and computers since I was a teenager and it's been constantly evolving the whole time. I've had to deal with the transition from tape to floppy disk to HDD to SSD, from DOS to windows from version to version, from desktop to laptop to tablet & smartphone. I don't think todays youth have any advantage tech wise to the previous few decades. I suspect if you put a tech savvy kid from the 80's into todays world they'd pick it all up in a very short amount of time.

1374297 2014-05-07 01:53:00 Most youth I know will make themselves aware at some point ;)

Although, learning before they get infected is probably a good idea:D

1374299 2014-05-07 02:41:00 To be honest though youth are just as prone to downloading **** to their pc as adults. Its just that many youth actually don't really know about virus protection and how that works at all. I've seen many people in my classes with laptops that have expired antivirus on them with the owners of said devices still thinking that they were protected. tuxdude143 (17146)
1374300 2014-05-07 02:47:00 Viruses are significantly less common these days compared to what they were "back in my day".

It's more malware and social engineering that causes the issues. You're less likely to be infected by a floppy disk these days (Or USB drive) than you are by allowing a bad toolbar / browser extension etc

And hands up who knows someone who uses their business PC as a toy . :p
They have confidential client info on it, use it for online banking, then let their kids play on it after hours :groan: Or use it for there own porn site perving
And you would think accountants would know better , especially after needing malware & virus cleanups on more than 1 occasion.
