2014-05-06 12:08:00 | Yeah I find that really cool, even learnt something - was never sure before which was the southern cross and now I even know how to find south once I've located that :) On my phone it's a little off in direction but it's near enough that you can figure it out.

2014-05-06 19:59:00 | Thanks guys, but as an aside how does it work? Does it use the Camera to transmit to some sort of database?

2014-05-06 20:06:00 | Doesn't use the camera, if you use it inside or point it at the ground it still shows you the stars. It seems to just have a map of the sky and display what it thinks is in the direction you point the phone using the built in sensors such as the compass and accelerometer etc. A camera based one might be good as well so it could identify what you are actually looking at but that's not what google's version appears to do. | dugimodo (138) | |
2014-05-06 20:53:00 | Yeah Compass (What direction are you facing), GPS (Local star information) and Accelerometer (To tell when you're tilting your phone around to show you stars for that part of the sky) | Chilling_Silence (9) | |

Seriously? You've struggled to find the Southern Cross and the Two Pointers?!! I've been able to locate it since I was at primary school. And that was before the invention of smart phones  |

2014-05-06 21:56:00 | The sky is full of crosses and pairs of bright stars and I never put any research into figuring it out :p Not something I was ever taught. One of those things I always meant to find out but never did, then along comes an app and that night I learnt how to locate it. Also for some reason I thought it would be upright as seen on our flag, I assume it looks like that from somewhere? | dugimodo (138) | |
