TV3: "NZ best in the world at fighting crime - expert"

That's what Gloria Laycock, professor of crime science at University College, London, thinks of our Prevention First strategy and focus on reducing the number of victims.

Professor Laycock was in Wellington this week for Tuesday's Leading Justice Symposium, which discussed the challenges the justice sector will face in 2024 and how we should respond.

She was on a panel I chaired at the symposium and on Wednesday, she sang the praises of our problem-solving approach to policing on TV3's Firstline programme.

She said our focus on addressing the causes of crime rather than simply reacting to crime once it occurred was leading the world and was an example for other countries to follow.

That's high praise indeed, and it's good to see that what we're doing is being noticed internationally.

The symposium brought together experts from across the criminal justice sector, and was a great opportunity to showcase the enormous potential of Prevention First.

Given the right tools and investment, Prevention First can make a huge difference to how we police now and in the future and the services we provide victims.

I also used the opportunity to encourage all sectors of society to collaborate to address the drivers and underlying causes of crime.

Everybody in New Zealand has a stake in us having communities where people are safe and they feel safe, so we should all work together to achieve that.

Great turnout

The day after the justice symposium, I was in Orewa for the Rodney Area Pay Parade.

This was the first pay parade I have attended as Commissioner, and it was a great pleasure to be invited to present long service good conduct and other awards.

These events are great opportunities for us to display our pride in being members of New Zealand Police and the pride we take in being members of the communities we serve.

I hope to get to many more of them during my term and my congratulations to all those involved in the Rodney parade.

This should stir the naysayers in this forum up a bit

:D

No need to parade, our friendly government has already enrolled you in the scheme, so you will pay no matter where you may be! How convenient.

1373961 2014-05-06 16:41:00 This is just the second time I've clicked on this shizza... why oh why do I need to to have it on these forums? I mean *** if anyone's interested I'm sure we could go to the website ourselves instead of having it posted here! *sigh*

Methinks certain posters have to much time on their hands.
