Ive even had Win8 users quite p&ssed off when I tell them that Win7 is still available & they could have bought a 7 PC/laptop instead. Less PC savvy users need shortcuts on the desktop, otherwise they really cant cope with 8, at all. And the scitzo dual gui: desktop/tiles does sometimes cause quite a bit of confusion. |

| 1387691 | 2014-11-05 20:59:00 | What 'sleep' issue do you have with 8.1, linw? I have experienced a couple of times when I leave the PC 'ON' for a few hours, and on waking up, the mouse cursor turned into an dotted 'I' shape. Have to restart the PC to restore it to normal. It doesn't happen every time, so no big deal. There are some machines that acquired a non sleep issue after the 8 to 8.1 upgrade. These machines won't sleep after the sleep timeout expires. Many of us have spent huge amounts of time on it to no avail. There is a thread with 192 pages and 1919 posts on the win 8 forum! Believe me, you don't want to go there!! I've no doubt MS could have fixed it but, for some reason, they didn't. Their fix is win 10!!! |

It's too late for it to ever be considered anything but a failure though and that's a shame because with the improvements made in 8.1 and a bit of time to get used to it windows 8 is really one of MS's better efforts to my mind. Windows 10 is shaping up to be a success much like 7 was after the problems with Vista. I find that amusing as having played with the current technical preview and windows 8.1 I can tell you they are really very similar. I may well end up turning the start screen on in 10 to make it act like 8. I'm not saying people have to like windows 8 and it's start menu though. If you don't like it that's fair enough. The start screen is easily fixed as at the start of this thread though. I think the real frustration for those of us who've come to like it is not that we expect everyone to share our views but rather that a lot of the people out there who rubbish it as total crap have really never given it a chance or even tried to adapt or in some cases haven't tried it at all and are judging it from screenshots or parroting other peoples opinions. If you've had windows 8 for a while and still dislike it fair enough and you have options that can make it near enough to windows 7 for most people in classic shell and start8 etc. If you've just got it or haven't really given it a chance yet give it a while to get used to before you decide to hate it. One good thing for me is you can pin the start screen to the quick launch bar next to classic shell's start button and effectively have 1 click access to both menu options. Not that I actually use classic shell myself but I have installed it for others a few times. |

Its all in the teaching, the persons willingness to learn something instead of being stuck in a rut. I had one person, I made a deal with earlier this year - He had XP, and some of his friends said they had W8,it was bad, so he assumed it was. He wanted a New Desktop, I said OK here's the deal-- you keep an open mind - I'll put Windows 8.1 on it, when I bring it back to you, I'll spend up to 1 Hour for free teaching you the ins and outs and anything you want/need to know, if after 4 days you hate it, I'll collect the PC remove W8.1 and put W7 on it at no cost. ---You're on he said. Well that's what happened, I spent roughly 45 minutes, at the end of that time he got on his cell and called someone, all I heard was " thought you said Windows 8.1 was hard -- you're a F***Ken dickhead. Got this Tech guy showing me and its easy". I called him back four days later as I said and asked if he wanted me to change it to W7 -- His reply was F**K Off --- its easy the way you showed me, Had a mate around here last night showed him what you showed me and he didn't know any of it- now he's changed his mind. ;) So all in the teaching and setting up, and keeping an open mind :D |

What I wrote is what I see on both computers. At workl today I went and checked 2 other computers one on Win 7 one on Win 8.1 both show the same as what i posted for the recycle bins. I've been using Win8.1 for near on 18 months at work and still can't wait to go home to my Win 7 machine, going to work feels like going backwards. However we also have a Win tablet at work with keyboard and Win 8.1 works fine on that, its just crap on a desktop in comparison to Win 7 |

| 1387695 | 2014-11-06 21:43:00 | after all this, win10 will really be Win8.1 with a few tweeks. More of a marketing exercise than anything. It will have the same bugs that have been there since vista , I still see them in Win8.1 |

| 1387697 | 2014-11-06 22:26:00 | The problem is in the Fisher Price interface. Thank god that Win 10 is coming out and you can be rid of it easily on a PC. Funnily enough for 95% of every day computer who wouldn't know what a CLI was or how to use it if you showed them, there is actually nothing wrong with well designed "Fisher Price" type UI. The issue comes from having a team of 90 people trying to design a UI that attempts to cater for the majority without much success. This can also be a highly contentious and often debated issue when it comes to "getting it right". What is known for a fact is that the more technical you make it, the less appeal it has to the mass market of every day users. And the more familiar you become with something the harder it is to move on and adjust to the next version. It is only IT Admins who fear the loss of their fiefdoms with the simplification of the evolving UI - regardless of how well it was designed. |
