1386867 2014-10-27 22:11:00 This will be "Fun" (sorry in silly mood) :D

Anyway, first you'll need the Os X mountain Lion installer. Have a look at the following Video, www.youtube.com it shows in detail how to get it ( legally) and create a bootable Drive.

Edited: just found another Video, how to make and install the OS -- But you'll still need the above. www.youtube.com

BTW-- A DVD Dual Layer will have DVD DL written on it.

Example: Do a google search for DVD Dl and select images.

1386869 2014-10-28 19:56:00 Did you buy this mac brand new or 2nd hand?
If it was brand new then you would have got discs with it, one with the operating system in it and one with the extra apps you mentioned .
You could reinstall from those .

If it was 2nd hand then chances are the apps you are having problems with are linked to the original owners Apple ID and you would need to purchase them yourself .

1386870 2014-10-29 00:59:00 Beemer, do you know how to compress a folder into a zip file?

Pretty sure I've done it before, so yes!

The Mac was purchased new and did not come with discs. The original OS is showing in purchases but when I try to reinstall it, I get a message telling me it's too old for the installation to be completed. It's a desktop model and came with everything on it, all I had to do was plug it in and connect it to the modem.

1386872 2014-10-30 18:56:00 Thanks - sounds way too complicated for me on my own and I'm reluctant to try something I'm feeling unsure of my ability to fix! I'll just have to wait until I can afford to pay someone to do it for me and put up with horrid Yosemite until then.

The speed seems a little better, but I am finding the blurriness really irritating. Everything seems to be slightly out of focus (and I've had laser vision correction so I know I've got good eyesight!) and reading the words across the top of my favourites menu in Safari is quite hard. It was fine before!

Is there a computer store or a tech at work who could take a look at it or try reinstalling the disk for you?

Sounds like there is an issue with the system fonts

Or try this

1386874 2014-10-31 08:14:00 Don't iMacs have a recovery partition with their original factory OS on them? Try hitting command + R on restart and you should be able to reinstall your original OS. icow (15313)
1386875 2014-11-07 01:03:00 I've tried that, icow - but because Yosemite is now installed, it keeps telling me the original OS is too old - Yosemite overrides it and won't let me go back. The only way I can go back is to restore from a backup, which I don't have.
Webdevguy - I'm self-employed so no techies at work to ask for help. I live in Levin, so asking at Dick Smith or Noel Leeming would be a waste of time as none of them know much about Macs.

My iMac was running like treacle (Yosemite) until recently when I upgraded my version of Little Snitch . Amazingly enough after I restarted my iMac was back to normal although it has started to slow down since then, and from what I have been reading that may have something to do with Chrome .

Have you tried doing an erase and reinstall?
