1387680 2014-11-05 06:12:00 Learn how to use it :p Mines EXACTLY the same as w7, SINGLE STEP - simply double click it and it opens to view its contents.

1st step put it on the desktop (it should be there by default----has been on every install I've done - and that's too many to remember), but if its not --- Right click the desktop / Personalize, Top left Change desktop Icons - Select what you want. BTW-- this is exactly the same for W7 - so nothing has changed.

If you wanted to expand even further you can right click it, pin to start - again double left click and it opens.

Wheres the Problem ?

The problem is in the Fisher Price interface. Thank god that Win 10 is coming out and you can be rid of it easily on a PC.

Double click to open (Win 7) click empty recycle bin. 2 steps
Double click to open (Win 8) click manage, click empty recycle bin. 3 steps

Now tell me its the same. :devil

Where did you dig up all those clicks ? :)

For me Win8.1 Open Recycle Bin with one click; in the Ribbon Empty Recycle Bin one click; Are you sure ? one click yes;

Win 7 Open Recycle Bin one click; right click file to delete; click delete; are you sure? click yes;

So, 3 clicks for Win 8.1, 4 clicks for Win 7, ergo Win 8.1 is faster than Win 7 :)

1387683 2014-11-05 06:24:00 The problem is in the Fisher Price interface. Thank god that Win 10 is coming out and you can be rid of it easily on a PC. You can do that now, no difference, the only time I goto the tiled start is when I want to, not because its the only way.

In fact using W10 is actually a bit of a pain after getting used to W8.1 (start menu) , in fact on mine I reverted it back to 8.1 style, after spending 10 minutes trying to get the damn programs to work and open some options that can be done on w8.1 in a couple of seconds.

1387684 2014-11-05 06:40:00 I find I much prefer the Win8.1 Desktop right click start button menu to the old style menu.
With a few tweaks and mods like an opaque taskbar, and having Win8.1 open to the desktop, I can't really see the need for 3rd party 'classic shells'.

Win8.1 is rather sparse on customisation of the desktop though, compared to previous versions

1387685 2014-11-05 18:27:00 I did mention liking windows 8 puts me in the minority, I think this thread has managed to illustrate that point quite nicely but when you look at the things people don't like about it none of it is particularly serious IMHO.
If you can get used to the start screen like myself and Wainui it's perfectly fine and works well. If you really don't like it you can install classic shell or Start8 and revert back to a windows 7 style interface or simply use the desktop more.

There's no great hardship here and it's just a personal preference for how the GUI looks rather than some huge flaw in the OS, it's stable , fast, and functional. It offers more options on how to do things than windows 7 and has more features not less.
Anyway windows 10 just gives you a MS default option to do basically the same thing that installing one of the start menu replacements does and keeps everything else about windows 8 while adding a couple of new features.

Much like Wainui & windows 10, I installed classic shell on a PC for a friend and having gotten used to the start screen found it added an awkward step to some functions I now use the start screen for. Any time a new OS comes out with some changes to the interface there's a period of adjustment. People hated windows 95, windows XP, and windows Vista (ok there were some good reasons there). The ones they didn't hate? 98 & windows 7 were both really just fixed up versions of the previous release and not truly a new OS. windows 8 is different though, the start screen has really upset people and they are not backing down. Me I don't have an issue with it. The only thing about 8 I don't like is the charms bar, and then it's just how you activate it that's annoying.

1387686 2014-11-05 19:15:00 Never saw the issue with win 8/8.1, myself. I just ran it in desktop mode. No need for classic shell stuff, either.

The one biggie with win 10 on my computer is it has completely fixed the sleep issue that appeared with win 8.1. Yea. Happiness is not spending/wasting many hours on trying to get it to sleep on a timeout.

But, good luck to all, however you want to use, or not use, windows!

1387687 2014-11-05 19:57:00 What 'sleep' issue do you have with 8.1, linw?

I have experienced a couple of times when I leave the PC 'ON' for a few hours, and on waking up, the mouse cursor turned into an dotted 'I' shape. Have to restart the PC to restore it to normal.

It doesn't happen every time, so no big deal.

1387688 2014-11-05 20:13:00 I just turn sleep off altogether, that fixes that problem :) wainuitech (129)
1387689 2014-11-05 20:17:00 99% of all people when shown what to do have no problems.

FUNNY thing is many people complain about the start menu/ button being different, yet never use it anyway apart from shutting down :D

^^ This.

Think of it like a full-screen start menu. All of a sudden Windows 8.1 is no different. Crying over one more click here vs one less click there and wanting to spend hours rolling back your OS to an older version seems rather backwards personally.
