1373799 2014-04-30 20:59:00 If you watched TV One News last night you would have seen a private Civil Engineer pointing out how simple the matter is.

The Creek that discharges the storm water is overgrown with weeds and just needs cleaning out.

Notice the flooding had gone in 24 hours and had the water flow not been obstructed the flooding wouldn’t have occurred.

However, I guess before a simple farm drainage maintenance programme can be undertaken the Council will have to apply to itself for Resource Consent. :groan:

1373801 2014-05-01 03:50:00 I ..... sell up and move to higher ground.

And who in their right mind would buy it?

1373802 2014-05-01 04:33:00 They appear to be more interested in rebuilding the Cathedral than sorting out the things that really matter to the poor sods that have to live there. CliveM (6007)
1373803 2014-05-01 05:52:00 I would either put my house on stilts or sell up and move to higher ground. I sure as hell wouldn't be whinging about something mother nature did. Build a house on a floodplain expect flooding as sure as night follows day.

What you don't understand is that prior to earthquakes Christchurch very rarely flooded, if it did it was due to a shitload of rain. Now an average rain is causing flooding. People can't sell their homes and move on because a. no one will buy them and b. if they did sell them it would be well below the current market value which means they go into mega debt when buying another place.

The simple fix is for the Government to offer the same deals to these people as part of the EQC payout. It wouldn't even cost that much as the flooding is only in small pockets around the city.

It is the CH CH CC who are suposed to come up with a plan of action to present to the government. The Govenment then can agree or not and act accordingly. With an election coming up they are likely to go along with whatever the CC wants. Your simple fix is far to easy and sensible to be adopted without several prior committee meetings to discuss the pros and cons at great length.

1373805 2014-05-01 06:53:00 Don't worry, Key has a plan. He will have Brownlee march from the low points to the sea, stamping his feet as he goes. The new rivers will be rented out to (overseas) adventure kayaking companies.
Sweet as.

CCC have proven many times over they are not capable of dealing with this magnitude of work, plenty of south island districts are still processing work on CCC's behalf. Why can't the Gov step in like they did previously and just sort it out? CCC have important things to do like humour the "save the Cathedral" lobby and browse colour charts and pick a paint for their repaired offices.

That would never happen. Brownlee wouldn't know how to exert that much energy.
