| 1374427 | 2014-05-08 00:56:00 | 8th May 2014 by Commissioner Mike Bush A sad loss It's with great sadness that I note the passing of Whangarei Detective Sergeant Andrew Clubley. Andrew was critically injured in a cycling accident on Sunday evening and he passed away yesterday morning. On Monday afternoon, I flew to Whangarei to support his wife and children and his colleagues. I was deeply moved by the love and support they showed for each other and for Andrew, who was a highly-respected and well-liked member of Police. I'm sure all staff will join me in sending our condolences to his family. Yesterday also marked the fifth anniversary of the passing of Senior Constable Len Snee, who was shot by Jan Molenaar in Napier on 7 May 2009. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues affected by this very recent tragedy. Targeting organised crime and drugs Congratulations to all staff involved in Operation Genoa, a lengthy investigation into the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine. The seizure of more than $3 million in assets - including luxury cars, gold bullion and silver ingots and more than $2 million in cash - shows how much gangs and other organised crime groups are profiting from this destructive drug. Methamphetamine causes enormous harm to users, their families and sometimes whole neighbourhoods and organised crime and drugs is one of the major drivers of crime in New Zealand. Illicit drug use is closely linked to a host of other crimes, including burglaries, thefts and violence. That's why we're using every tool we have to target the gangs and other organised crime groups that manufacture and supply drugs with no regard for the damage being done. Well done to all involved. Reflecting the community On Monday, I attended the first meeting of the new Women's Advisory Network Steering Group. This great initiative is being driven by senior women in Police and aims to identify women leaders of the future and provide role models for our women staff. I fully support its work and I outlined to the group's members the Police Executive's commitment to back any good ideas to develop and promote diversity within our organisation. As Robert Peel famously said, "The police are the public and the public are the police". That means it's vital that we reflect the communities we serve across all levels of our organisation. I also had a great opportunity this week to catch up with area commanders, who gathered at the Royal New Zealand Police College for a two-day conference yesterday. These members have a key leadership role in New Zealand Police, and it was a good chance to chat to them about the next phase of our Policing Excellence programme and Prevention First strategy. I was delighted to see their enthusiasm for our direction and the work they do. The new Commissioner doesn't seem to have quite the grasp on what the job is about that his predecessor had. His blogs seem to be nothing more than a diary record of what he's been up to, lacking the insight of why he should involve the general public and gain credibility and goodwill. These blogs seem to be not as news worthy, and certainly less readable as in the past. I'm leaning towards discontinuing posting these. As Greg has commented, anyone who is interested can access the police site themselves. So over to you - vote YES or NO. Yes I'll continue, No I'll stop the Commissioner posts. Majority rules (if "no" I won't be offended :D ) |

It's the modern way. You mean the executives who are sometimes known by the nickname of "FIGJAM". In Yuppie speak, F*** I'm Good, Just Ask Me. :D |
