| 1477412 | 2021-05-30 21:21:00 | So it turns out all the problems I've been having since swapping the PSU are down to a loose sata cable on the optical drive, The question I have now that I'd like some opinions on is do we think my PSU is faulty or could a sata cable cause sudden power loss? I don't think it's likely myself. Optical? I doubt it...it could cause Windows issues with the HDD cable, I've had that on a customers PC before.... A dodgy or loose sata cable - or connector - on HDD would give you either windows crashing completely or no O/S found on boot. |

| 1477413 | 2021-05-31 00:28:00 | 3 or 4 times in the last 2 days my pc has just stopped as if the power went off. could a sata cable cause sudden power loss? I don't think it's likely myself. Simple answer YES. If the cable was lose and was causing a short then it could shut down. Any short will normally cause instant shutdown /reboot. Had a similar experience on my lounge PC. Several times when copying files over the last few weeks from Drive E the PC would Lock, then come right again shortly after. ONLY happened when using Drive E, Thinking there may be a problem with the Drive went to test it and as soon as I lightly bumped the Wire loom - the power plug fell out of the Drive --OOPS. Plugged it back in fully and problem disappeared. Somehow it had worked its way lose, you could see by the dust on the plug it had not been fully seated for some time. |

Power supply fault windows possibly corrupt and or driver issues sata cable issue |

| 1477416 | 2021-05-31 11:59:00 | There were definitely a lot of issues after the power off incidents. SFC did find corrupted files, the BIOS had reverted back to the original, and at several points the machine decided it would hang on the BIOS logo screen and go no further. I almost ordered a new motherboard. It was the sata data cable for the blue ray drive. I know because the PC was running and I was checking the sata cables into the board (yeah maybe not the smartest method) and when I discovered one was a little loose and pushed it in the PC rebooted and suddenly all my BIOS hanging / boot issues disappeared. The reason I was playing with drive cables is the latency monitor I screenshotted earlier was indicating the AHCI miniport driver even after a complete drive wipe and fresh install which makes me think it was also the cause of the micro pauses and audio sync, but maybe not. Traced the cable and it was the optical drive for sure, also all the other drives I'd already tested earlier. In hindsight I don't think the optical drive was even detected in windows. I use it so seldom I hadn't noticed. Also gave me reason to discover an i5 11400F and motherboard is cheaper than a ryzen 5600X by itself, maybe my next upgrade is going to be intel after all. The 5600X was on my radar. |

The "F" versions of Intel CPU's means they DONT have integrated graphics, so you HAVE to have a separate graph Card. That's one of the reasons they are cheaper. 11400F = No integrated Graphics. 11400 = Has integrated Graphics. (more Expensive) Almost got caught out with that my self a few months back. |

| 1477419 | 2021-05-31 23:30:00 | I find it surprising that reconnecting a loose cable caused a reset as SATA is supposed to be hot swappable. SATA II is, but found a good reply to a similar question: SATA 1 it was *optional* for hotswap support. that's the key there. I've got sata 1 DVD burners here, and some hotplug, while others freeze the machine, for example. The optical drive may not be liking it and had a hissy fit causing a freeze. The OPS original post said The power and reset buttons do nothing and oddly the rgb lighting stays on |

| 1477421 | 2021-06-01 08:26:00 | Sure, but this is a 3yr old machine with a BluRay drive... Surely nothing is SATA1 in that setup? Who Knows - Without actually having every detail (and this is often the case people only tell half the story) its impossible to say. But going by what's been reported back if the cable was causing the problem when lose it must have some effect on the problem. Do you know how many times people have called tried to explain a problem only to leave out 1 or 2 facts that were actually the cause. Been to hundreds of jobs where what the local "expert" says what / where the problem is and its totally different. Had one job last week, the "expert" swore blue murder the noise coming from the computer was a HDD, they even said they would put money on it. Just as well I said NO, as they would have lost the bet ;) -- As soon as I heard the actual computer running on site could tell with out even opening the case, it wasn't the HDD. Should have taken the bet, even just to teach them a lesson :D |
