| 1489493 | 2022-11-30 21:40:00 | So sons PC suddenly wouldn't boot. It (after some fiddling with bios) is in process of checking E: it says, it did this straight on starting, not going to Windows at all. Why the hell does a suspect drive, other than boot have anything to do with it? He has C: an SSD which is boot and windows. D: data, programs E: games and music |

He removed the battery, put it back and managed to get it to boot and it went into this checking and has been there since last night. |

If its been flagged as dirty or there are file corruptions, then it will scan and attempt to repair. If the drives to bad then it will take ages or wont complete at all. Easy way to tell stop the scan disconnect the suspect drive and see what happens. If its OK then replace the drive after saving its data. Once it boots there are ways to stop it checking - Have a read www.easeus.com BUT its only going to fail at some point, better to fix while you can than wait for it to break completely. |

You should be able to, BUT if its checking on every boot then there is a problem someplace, and apart from being a Pain to cancel every time, it WILL sooner or later cause even more problems. Better to fix then leave it. Bit like people who get told their HDD has Bad sectors and should be replaced, sooner or later it WILL fail and run the risk of losing data. Had that happen a few years back, told the Owner to back up NOW (or I can do it and replace the drive at the same time) as the drive will fail, they said they would do it later that day (and didn't). Sure enough about two weeks later - panic call drive totally failed, had to be sent to a proper data forensic recovery company as it was so bad, cost them around $900 and 3 weeks of worry to get 95% of the data back. |

But why would a bad drive, with no files to do with Windows stop it booting altogether. he's since swapped it out, it had game files only. Steam games. So no loss...but a black screen??! |

So no loss...but a black screen??! It more than likely means the drive had either bad sectors or some other sort of physical problem, windows tries to read it and gets stuck in doing so (empty or not) I had a few drives like that, even completely empty computer simply wouldn't boot if they were attached, and try connecting Via external Case, they would simply either lock up the computer as it tried to read the drive or not show at all, even in partitioning software. |

| 1489502 | 2022-12-03 07:03:00 | Reminds me of how optical drives used to lock up a system for ages and also slow booting to a crawl if a damaged disk was inserted. Also I think maybe windows still has the ridiculous habit of hiding boot files on another drive if more than one disk is connected when it's installed. That's always annoyed me as one of the stupidest Ideas MS has come up with, it should at least give you the option to say not to do that during install if nothing else. |
